Gabriel Arcand (born June 4, 1949) is aCanadian actor.[1] He is the brother of film directorDenys Arcand.[2]
After studying philosophy atMcGill University, Arcand spent his formative professional years atLa Criée inMarseille, France, and later inPoland where he studied theatre. Since he made his 1973 screen debut in his brother's first feature,La Maudite Galette, he established himself asQuebec’s iconic strong, silent type and has given subtle but powerful performances in a wide range of films such asRéjeanne Padovani,Les Plouffe,Le Crime d’Ovide Plouffe,Le Déclin de l’empire américain,Post Mortem andCongorama.[3]
He won theAcademy of Canadian Cinema and Television's award forBest Actor at the6th Genie Awards in 1985 for his performance inThe Crime of Ovide Plouffe (Le Crime d'Ovide Plouffe) and at the2nd Canadian Screen Awards in 2014 forThe Dismantling (Le Démantèlement), and the award forBest Supporting Actor at the8th Genie Awards in 1987 forDecline of the American Empire. He was also nominated for Best Actor at the3rd Genie Awards in 1982 forLes Plouffe and at the20th Genie Awards forPost Mortem, and for Best Supporting Actor at the2nd Genie Awards in 1981 forSuzanne and at the20th Genie Awards in 1999 forLe Grand serpent du monde.
