GMA3 is an Americandaytimenews program broadcast byABC. It serves as a third, afternoon hour of ABC's national morning showGood Morning America.
The series originally premiered on September 10, 2018, asGMA Day. Hosted byMichael Strahan andSara Haines, thespin-off replacedThe Chew on ABC'sdaytime lineup. In late-January 2019, the program was rebranded asGMA3: Strahan & Sara (or simplyStrahan & Sara) to place a larger emphasis on its hosts. After filling in for Haines while she was onmaternity leave, actressKeke Palmer joined the program full-time in August 2019, and it was renamed accordingly toStrahan, Sara & Keke.
On March 17, 2020,Strahan, Sara & Keke was suspended due to the onset of theCOVID-19 pandemic in the United States, and was replaced by theABC News Live-producedPandemic: What You Need to Know to provide special coverage. Although it was originally billed as a temporary replacement forStrahan, Sara & Keke, theWhat You Need to Know format quietly became permanent, and thePandemic branding was replaced byGMA3 in June. In 2025, as part of cuts and layoffs by Disney,GMA3 began to be reintegrated into theGood Morning America staff under executive producer Simone Swink.
Following the cancellation of the short-lived daytime talk showThe Revolution, ABC aired an afternoon spin-off ofGood Morning America titledGood Afternoon America as an interim replacement from July to September 2012.[1] Hosted byJosh Elliott andLara Spencer, the program would primarily feature news and discussion related to celebrities andpopular culture, as well as music performances.[2][3][4] It filled the 2:00 p.m. ET/PT timeslot until September 10, 2012, whenGeneral Hospital was moved up into the timeslot, and ABC gave the 3:00 p.m. hour back to its affiliates.[4]

On May 23, 2018, ABC announced that it had canceledThe Chew, and that the program would be replaced by a new third hour ofGood Morning America.[5][6] In July 2018, the title of the program was announced asGMA Day, co-hosted byGMA anchorMichael Strahan andThe View panelistSara Haines.[7]
On January 28, 2019, the show was rebranded asGMA3: Strahan & Sara (or simplyStrahan & Sara), with a new logo and updated studio.Variety reported that the decision was meant to partially downplay its ties toGood Morning America by placing a larger emphasis on its hosts, in a similar manner toToday with Kathie Lee and Hoda. The show's initial ratings in the first half of the season had been slightly weaker than those ofThe Chew, declining from a 2 million viewer average to between 1.7 and 1.9 million viewers.[8]
With Haines going onmaternity leave after the birth of her third child in June 2019, actressKeke Palmer began filling in as a co-host in the same month.[9] On July 31, 2019, it was reported that Palmer would join the show full-time as a third host, as the network said viewers had found Palmer to be an appealing co-host with good chemistry with Strahan and Haines. On August 26, 2019, the program was rebranded accordingly asGMA3: Strahan, Sara & Keke.[10][11]

On March 11, 2020, ABC announced that the series along with its morning counterpart would suspend in-studio audiences "for the time being" due to theCOVID-19 pandemic in the United States, following a similar decision made by the network andDisney–ABC Domestic Television for their other talk shows, includingThe View,Live with Kelly and Ryan, andTamron Hall.[12]
On March 17, 2020, ABC announced that it would temporarily replaceStrahan, Sara & Keke withPandemic: What You Need to Know, a daytime newscast produced by ABC News' streaming channelABC News Live, which would focus on COVID-19 and its impact on the United States. It would be anchored byAmy Robach from the same studio that was used byGMA3, and feature contributions from ABC News chief medical correspondentJennifer Ashton.[13][14]

Despite being billed as a temporary replacement forStrahan, Sara & Keke, theWhat You Need to Know format quietly became permanent: in June 2020, the program was retitledGMA3: What You Need to Know, and began to steadily increase its coverage of stories unrelated to the pandemic.[15] On August 2, 2020, still absent official confirmation from ABC, Palmer stated onWatch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen thatStrahan, Sara & Keke had been canceled.[16] Later that month,Variety reported that Haines would return toThe View as a panelist for its upcoming season.[17] On September 18, 2020,GMA correspondentT. J. Holmes was announced as a new co-anchor beginning on September 21, 2020.[18] At that time,GMA3 also adopted a new blue and orange-themed logo and on-air branding to increase its ties toGood Morning America, dropping the red and white branding used byPandemic.[19]
On December 5, 2022, Holmes and Robach were temporarily placed on leave from the program by ABC News, after it was reported that the co-anchors had an extra-marital romantic relationship. Rhiannon Ally,DeMarco Morgan andGio Benitez, began to serve as one of many fill-in hosts at the time, along with Eva Pilgrim.[20][21][22] On January 27, 2023, it was announced that Holmes and Robach would depart the network.[23] On May 12, 2023, Ashton, Morgan, and Pilgrim were named their permanent successors.[24] In June 2024, Ashton departed ABC News (and, in turn,GMA3) to focus on her new women's health company Ajenda.[25]
In March 2025,GMA3 was impacted by a round of layoffs across ABC News, which included executive producer Catherine McKenzie and other staff members; as a result, the program was brought under the mainGood Morning America staff and its executive producer Simone Swink.[26][27] In April 2025, theNew York Post reported that ABC was planning changes to the hour, including the possible replacement of Morgan and Pilgrim with either new anchors or existingGood Morning America anchors.[28] On July 7, both Morgan and Pilgrim left ABC News andGMA3, with Pilgrim announcing that she would become the new host of the syndicatednews magazineInside Edition.[29][30][31]
On June 16, 2025,Good Morning America andGMA3 relocated from Times Square Studios to a newly-built studio at7 Hudson Square.GMA3 concurrently adopted the same logo, on-air branding, and graphics as the main program, dropping theWhat You Need to Know subtitle in the process.[32][33][34]
ABC News would repurpose theWhat You Need to Know branding for a new short-form webcast onDisney+ that premiered on July 21, 2025. The program is co-anchored byJames Longman andRachel Scott, and focuses on top stories, entertainment news, andviral videos.[34][35]
