Growth differentiation factor 7 (GDF7) is aprotein that in humans is encoded by theGDF7gene.[5]
GDF7 belongs to thetransforming growth factor beta superfamily that is specifically found in a signaling center known as theroof plate that is located in the developing nervous system ofembryos. The roof plate is required for the generation of several classes ofspinal cord dorsalinterneurons; GDF7 specifically induces the formation ofsensory neurons in thedorsal spinal cord fromneural crest cells by generating signals within the roof plate.[5][6]
GDF7 is also known as bone morphogenic protein 12 (BMP-12).[7]
