Géza Röhrig (Hungarian:Röhrig Géza,pronounced[ˈrøːriɡˈɡeːzɒ]; born 11 May 1967) is a Hungarian actor and poet. He is best known for his role in the 2015 filmSon of Saul,[1] which won theGrand Prix at the2015 Cannes Film Festival, theGolden Globe forBest Foreign Language Film and theAcademy Award forBest Foreign Language Film.

Life and career

Géza Röhrig was born inBudapest,Hungary. His mother left the family after he was born, and his father died when he was four, so Röhrig spent his childhood in foster care.[2] From the age of 12 he was raised by a Jewish family. In the 1980s, he was the frontman of anunderground music band calledHuckleberry (also known asHuckRebelly), whose concerts were almost always interrupted by thecommunist authorities. At university he studiedHungarian andPolish, and after a visit toAuschwitz during a study tour inPoland, he decided to become anOrthodox Jew inBrooklyn,United States. He portrayed poetAttila József in a film byJózsef Madaras.[3] He studied filmmaking underIstván Szabó.[3][4]

He published two collections of poems on the theme of theShoah,Hamvasztókönyv (literally "Book of Incineration", 1995) andFogság ("Captivity", 1997).[5] He graduated from theAcademy of Drama and Film in Budapest with a degree infilmmaking.[6] Since 2000, he has lived in theBronx borough ofNew York City,[7] where he received a degree from theJewish Theological Seminary and has been a kindergarten teacher at Hannah Senesh Community Day School in Brooklyn.[8] He is married, and has four children.[2] He has published many collections of poetry.[9]
