The album was recorded at BMG Studios in New York City on January 14, 1992.[1] It was produced byBob Thiele.[3] The musicians were pianistJohn Hicks, trumpetersGreg Gisbert andClark Terry, trombonistAl Grey, tenor saxophonistJoshua Redman, bassistRon Carter, and drummerGrady Tate.[1] "I Want to Talk About You" is a trio track.[3]

Friends Old and New was released byNovus Records.[1]
