Amphitrite was a 44-gunArmide-classfrigate of theFrench Navy that saw service during theNapoleonic Wars.
Ordered on 6 January 1806,Amphitrite waslaid down atCherbourg-en-Cotentin,France, in August 1806. She waslaunched on 11 April 1808 and completed later that year.
Under thecommand ofFrigate captainJean François Denis de Keredern de Trobriand,Amphitrite departed Cherbourg bound forMartinique on 10 November 1808 as part of asquadron under the overall command ofContre-AmiralJacques Félix Emmanuel Hamelin that also included the frigatesVénus andJunon, thebrigCygne, and the vesselPapillon[1] The next day, the squadron broke up.
Amphitrite arrived atFort-de-France, Martinique, only to find itblockaded by the BritishRoyal Navy. She managed to slip through and reach the harbour. On 3 February 1809, as the Britishattacked Martinique, the FrenchscuttledAmphitrite to prevent her capture.
In 1960, construction work on a modern commercial harbour in Fort de France uncovered the bottom of thehull ofAmphitrite.Copper sheets of the hull and other fragments were recovered and are now on display at theService Régional de l'Archéologie.[1]
