History

[edit]

RF&P

[edit]
Main article:Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad

What is today the Fredericksburg Line was originally part of theRichmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad (or RF&P), a connector railroad between thePennsylvania andBaltimore and Ohio Railroads inWashington, D.C., and theSeaboard Air Line andAtlantic Coast Line Railroads inRichmond. In 1991CSX absorbed the RF&P and the line is now theirRF&P Subdivision.

Virginia Railway Express

[edit]
Main article:Virginia Railway Express

In 1992 Virginia Railway Express (or VRE) was formed to serve the former RF&P betweenWashington's Union Station andFredericksburg, Virginia as well as stations between Washington andManassas, Virginia onNorfolk Southern's Piedmont Division. In 2015, the route was extended toSpotsylvania.

Amtrak

[edit]

Along with VRE, manyAmtrak trains also utilize this line. TheirNortheast Regional trains stop at six of the 12 stations on the line andAlexandria is a major stop for six of their long distance trains.

Expansion

[edit]

Work was completed on a third track betweenAlexandria andFranconia-Springfield in 2010. This track enables VRE and Amtrak trains to bypass slow freight trains over Franconia Hill. VRE would also like to add another third track betweenPowells Creek inPrince William County and Arkendale Road inStafford County in the near future.[3]
