Fred Van Lente (born February 14, 1972, inTacoma, Washington) fromChagrin Falls, Ohio[1] is an American writer, primarily ofcomic books andgraphic novels.

Career

Van Lente is the co-founder, along with artistRyan Dunlavey, ofEvil Twin Comics, which produces his and Dunlavey’s non-fiction comic books, the first and most famous of which isAction Philosophers.

Recent work includes becoming the ongoing co-author ofIncredible Hercules withGreg Pak,[2] as well as writingMarvel Zombies 3[3][4][5][6][7] andMarvel Zombies 4.[8][9] withKev Walker andX-Men Noir withDennis Calero.[10][11] Upcoming work includes two one-shots as part ofMarvel Zombies Return.[12] He also wrote the first issue ofDeadpool Team-Up (number #899 as it was counting backwards from the #900 special).[13]

Van Lente created a newPower Man,Victor Alvarez, who first appeared in theShadowland: Power Man mini-series,[14][15] then in a newPower Man and Iron Fist series, also by Van Lente.[16][17][18]

Van Lente andNew York Innovative Theatre Awards-winner Crystal Skillman co-authored and staged "King Kirby," a play based on the life of innovative comics creatorJack Kirby. "King Kirby" was staged at Brooklyn's Brick Theater as part of its annual Comic Book Theater Festival. The play was aNew York Times Critics' Pick selection and was funded by a widely publicized Kickstarter campaign.[19][20][21]

Van Lente has been called "one of the most idiosyncratic and insightful new voices in comics."[22] In 2014, he was nominated for aHarvey Award in the category, Special Award for Humor in Comics.[23]

Van Lente's industry awards includeAction Philosophers receiving aXeric Grant in 2004; it was also nominated for anIgnatz Award in 2005 and 2006. TheAmerican Library Association namedAction Philosophers a "Great Graphic Novel for Teens" in 2007. His "super crime" seriesThe Silencers was named "Best Independent Super Hero Comic" byBroken Frontier in 2003.
