Frank Morales is anEpiscopalpriest andactivist inNew York City.
Morales was born in 1949 and grew up in theJacob Riis Houses on theLower East Side ofManhattan.[1] His father wasPuerto Rican and his mother wasPeruvian. He first became involved in politics after the assassinations ofJohn F. Kennedy,Robert F. Kennedy andMartin Luther King Jr. as a member of the Assassination Information Committee.[1]
Morales graduated from theGeneral Theological Seminary in 1976, and became an assistant pastor in 1978.[1] In theBronx he worked withsquatters. In one interview he recalled, “I used to walk out of services with a crowbar and we’d open up abandoned buildings…”[1] He now volunteers atSt Mark's Church in-the-Bowery.[2][3]
In 2003, he founded the Campaign to Demilitarize the Police in NYC.[1] He continues to campaign on housing issues.[4]
He was married to journalistNancy Jo Sales from 2004 to 2006.[5]
