American historian (1907–1984)

Frances Dorothy Acomb (October 15, 1907 – January 19, 1984) was an American academic and historian who wrote about United States history and English-French relations.[1][2]

Biography

Early life and education

Frances Dorothy Acomb was born on October 15, 1907, inDonora, Pennsylvania.[2]

Career

Acomb earned aBachelor of Arts in 1928 fromWellesley College and aMaster of Arts in 1932 inSmith College. She received a fellowship from theAmerican Association of University Women in 1941.[3] She earned aPh.D. in 1943 from theUniversity of Chicago.[1]

She taughthigh school from 1929 to 1936. She worked as aresearch assistant at the University of Chicago from 1936 to 1943. DuringWorld War II, she was aUnited States Department of War historian. She was an instructor atNew York State Teachers College, Albany, after 1943. She was anassistant professor and later professor atDuke University from 1945 to 1975, becomingprofessor emerita of history in 1975.[4][1][2]

Acomb published a biography ofJacques Mallet du Pan and two other books.[1]

Death

Frances Dorothy Acomb died on January 19, 1984, inDurham, North Carolina.[2]
