Diplomatic relations were first established in 1993 following North Macedonia's (then formerly known officially as the Republic of Macedonia) independence fromYugoslavia in 1991. France has supported both North Macedonia'sbid to join theEuropean Union and North Macedonia'saccession to NATO.^{[citation needed]}
