Amaury de Chaunac-Lanzac (French pronunciation:[amoʁidəʃonaklɑ̃zak]; born 11 February 1942), better known asFrançois d'Orcival ([fʁɑ̃swadɔʁsival]), is a Frenchconservative journalist and essayist. He is the president of the editorial committee atValeurs Actuelles and sits on the board of directors of the publisherValmonde.[1][2]
Amaury de Chaunac-Lanzac was born on 11 February 1942 inAurignac,Haute-Garonne.[3] Aged 18, he joined theneo-fascist movementJeune Nation.[1][4] Early in his political involvement, he took the pseudonym François d'Orcival.[5] In 1960, he was one of the founding members of theFédération des étudiants nationalistes (FEN).[1] He supported theOrganisation armée secrète and was arrested in 1962, then jailed for four weeks.[1] D'Orcival was editor-in-chief of the FEN magazine,Les Cahiers universitaires, from 1961 to 1967.[4] Between 1963 and 1966, he also wrote for the far-right magazinesDéfense de l’Occident, led byMaurice Bardèche, andEurope-Action, edited byDominique Venner andAlain de Benoist.[1][4]
In July 1966, d'Orcival joinedValeurs Actuelles, thenLe Spectacle du Monde, both edited byRaymond Bourgine.[1] He also wrote forLeNouveau Journal.[4] Meanwhile, he was involved in the creation of theNationalist Movement of Progress (MNP). d'Orcival joinedValeurs Actuelles again in 1968, then co-founded withGRECE members the magazineNouvelle École in 1970. d'Orcival remained a member ofNouvelle École's editorial board until 1976.[1][6][4] The following year, he became the editor-in-chief ofValeurs Actuelles and was involved withLouis Pauwels in the creation ofLe Figaro Magazine in 1977–1978. From 1984, d'Orcival served as the director of publication atValeurs Actuelles.[4][1]
In 1998, he was elected president of the Syndicat Professionnel de la Presse Magazine et d'Opinion (SPPMO), an organization which includes – besidesValeurs Actuelles –Le Nouvel Observateur,Le Canard enchaîné,Télérama orL’Humanité hebdo. In 2004, he was elected president of theFédération Nationale de la Presse Française (FNPF).[1] From 2006, d'Orcival has also worked as an editorialist atLeFigaro Magazine.[4]
On June 23, 2008, d'Orcival was inducted into theAcadémie des Sciences Morales et Politiques, following the death ofHenri Amouroux.[7]
