Fordon is a village and formercivil parish, now in the parish ofWold Newton, in theEast Riding of Yorkshire, England, near the border withNorth Yorkshire. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) south ofScarborough and 10 miles (16 km) north-west ofBridlington. In 1931 the parish had a population of 29.[1]
There is a small church dedicated to St James that is now a Grade II*listed building.[2]

The nameFordon, first attested in theDomesday Book of 1086 asFordun,Fordune, andForduna, is thought to come from theOld English wordsfore ('in front of') anddūn ('hill'). Thus it once meant 'In front of the hill'.[3]
In 1823 Fordon was in the parish ofHunmanby and theWapentake ofDickering. Occupations at the time included three farmers.[4]
Fordon was formerly atownship in the parish of Hunmanby,[5] from 1866 Fordon was a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Wold Newton.[6]
