TheFord Mustang GT3 is agrand tourerracing car built byFord Racing andMultimatic Motorsports for use inGroup GT3 competition.[2][3] Developed in 2022, the car is based on theseventh-generation Ford Mustang Dark Horse[4] and was formally unveiled as part of the 100th anniversary of the24 Hours of Le Mans on June 9, 2023, making its competitive debut six months later at the2024 24 Hours of Daytona.[5][6] It currently competes in a number of major racing series worldwide, including theDeutsche Tourenwagen Masters,FIA World Endurance Championship,GT World Challenge, andIMSA SportsCar Championship.

Development

[edit]

In 2022, it was announced thatFord Performance andMultimatic Motorsports would be developing aGroup GT3-specificationFord Mustang.[7]

The car is powered by a race-tuned 5.4-liternaturally aspiratedFord CoyoteV8 developed in partnership with long-timeWorld Rally Championship factory partnerM-Sport.[8] It is equipped with aBosch MS 6.4engine control unit, a four-plateAP Racing clutch with a MEGA-line e-clutch actuator, and a 6-speedXtracsequential manual. For better weight distribution, the transmission was positioned closer to the rear axle.[9]

The chassis features anFIA-homologated fully-integrated compliant racing roll cage as well as other safety devices. It hasMultimatic five-way adjustable DSSV dampers, double wishbone suspension on both axles and Alcon brake discs.[9] It also features quickly replaceable parts to make rapid repairs, although this created issues in the car's first year, when in some cases, the boot lid and diffuser would come loose or detach from the car completely, causing lengthy repairs or retirements from races. Ford was later granted permission by theFédération Internationale de l'Automobile to implement reliability updates to the car to alleviate the issue.[10]

Ford Mustang GT3 Evo

[edit]

On November 13, 2025, Ford began testing an 'Evo' kit on the Mustang GT3 at anIMSA-sanctioned test inDaytona International Speedway.[11] Ford detailed the 'Evo' package in a press article on December 17, 2025 highlighting a series of upgrades based on improving overall vehicle dynamics,[12] including dive planes, a revised front splitter and rear diffuser, an updated brakes package fromBrembo, and improved suspension.[13]

Teams

[edit]

Upon its debut,Proton Competition andMultimatic Motorsports were announced as the first teams to run the Mustang GT3, with two-car entries in theFIA World Endurance Championship and theIMSA SportsCar Championship, respectively.[14] Four other teams have since fielded Mustangs in other racing series: Dollahite Racing,[15]Gradient Racing,[16]Haupt Racing Team,[17] andRiley Motorsports.[18]

Competition history

[edit]

Early in its first year of competition, the Ford Mustang GT3 experienced issues with its boot lid and diffuser as either part would come loose or detach from the car completely during races. TheFédération Internationale de l'Automobile later granted Ford an "erratum fix" to resolve the issue, which Ford believed to have been caused when cars would follow closely, disrupting airflow.[10] The Mustang later achieved its first pole position and podium in any series at the2024 Michelin GT Challenge at VIR courtesy ofProton Competition's #55 car in the GTD class andMultimatic Motorsports' #64 car in the GTD Pro class, respectively.[20][21] Proton Competition also secured a podium at the2024 24 Hours of Le Mans with their #88 car, Ford's first atLe Mans since2018.[22]

Ford's program expanded in 2025 with Dollahite Racing,Gradient Racing, andHaupt Racing Team fielding Mustangs inADAC GT Masters,Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters,GT World Challenge, andNürburgring Langstrecken-Serie.[23] The Mustang would earn its first victory at the2025 24 Hours of Daytona following a close battle withBMW andChevrolet in the final hours.[24] It also secured a notable class win at the2025 24 Hours of Nürburgring, with Haupt Racing Team finishing 1st in SP 9 Pro-Am and 4th overall.[25]
