Football is the most popular sport inIvory Coast.[1][2] 50% of the Ivorian people consider themselves football fan.Algeria,Cameroon,Ghana,Morocco,Senegal andSouth Africa are the only African countries with an equal or higher percentage.[3]

The national team won theAfrica Cup of Nations inSenegal in1992.[4] In 2006 they participated in the2006 World Cup inGermany. The youth national teams have also done well in world championships, and the clubs fromIvory Coast have won several continental titles[citation needed]. The Ivory Coast national team won a second African cup of nations in2015.[5]

Famous players from the country includeKolo Touré,Didier Drogba,[6][7]Wilfried Bony,Yaya Touré,Gervinho,Seydou Doumbia, andSalomon Kalou.

National competitions

The national championship, organised by theIvorian Football Federation and sponsored by the companyOrange, features 16 clubs inDivision 1, 36 inDivision 2, 36 inDivision 3.

Two national cups, theCoupe de Côte d'Ivoire and theCoupe Houphouët-Boigny, put these clubs to grips every year.

National Teams

In1984 theIvory Coast organized theAfrican Cup of Nations with matches inAbidjan andBouaké. To support theNational team and because of the popularity of this sport in the country, the government decided to close the schools for the duration of the competition. Although the national team was eliminated in the first round of the event, no course took place for 2 weeks.

The national team won theAfrican Cup of Nations in1992 and was a finalist in the competition in2006.[8] In 2006, for the first time in its history,Ivory Coast qualified for the2006 FIFA World Cup. In 2008, his Olympic team qualified for the2008 Summer Olympics.

Clubs

Ivory Coast clubs have won 6 continental trophies: two in the African Champions League, three Cup victories and a cup success of the African Football Confederation. It should be added that Ivory Coast has also won several small subregional tournaments (West Africa) in the club or with its national team. In particular the tournaments of the Council of the Agreement those of ECOWAS or those organised by the UFOA, the Union of the West African Football federations.

The women's national team qualified for the2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.[9]

Twitter research from 2015 found that the most popularEnglish Premier League club in Ivory Coast wasChelsea, with 35% of Ivorian Premier League fans following the club, followed byArsenal (23%) andManchester United (15%).[10]
