The men'sfootball tournament has been a regularAsian Games sporting event since the1951 edition, while the women's tournament began in1990.

History

The firstAsian Games hadfootball tournament.

Since the2002 Asian Games, age limit for men teams is under-23 plus up to three overage players for each squad,[1] same as the age limit infootball competitions at the Summer Olympics.

AlthoughKazakhstan is a member of theOlympic Council of Asia, they cannot participate in football due to their football federationKFF has been a member of theUEFA since 2002. The same rule applies to theGuam andAustralia are members of theAFC, but they are members ofOceania National Olympic Committees.

Japan is the only nation to have won both Gold medals of Men's and Women's tournament in an Asian Games in the same year (2010).
