[edit]

Fontana began in the 1950s as a subsidiary of the Dutch Philips Records; whenPhilips restructured its music operations, it dropped Fontana in favor ofVertigo Records.

Fontana's U.S. counterpart label was started in 1964 and distributed byPhilips US subsidiaryMercury Records. The initial single release (F 1501) was an instrumental track with a wild teen beat by famed British session drummerBobby Graham, both sides featuringJimmy Page on guitar. Among the hitmakers wereWayne Fontana & the Mindbenders (later on their own simply asThe Mindbenders),The Troggs,The New Vaudeville Band,Manfred Mann,Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, andSteam.[2]

In 2009, the label releasedBrooke Hogan's album.[3]

The label was revived in 2025 as part of a restructuring of Universal Music UK's labels. It serves as the UK home for Universal Music's affiliated jazz labels:Blue Note,Verve Records, andImpulse!. The label's roster also includes pop artists who moved fromDecca during the same restructuring. Tom Lewis (not to be confused withthe actor) currently manages the label.
