Fole (Swedish pronunciation:[ˈfûːlɛ])[2] is a populated area, asocken (not to be confused withparish), on the Swedish island ofGotland.[3] It comprises the same area as theadministrative Fole District, established on 1 January 2016.[4]
Fole is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name of the small village surrounding themedievalFole Church,[5] sometimes referred to asFole kyrkby. It is situated in the central northern part of Gotland.[6]
Fole Church is a 13th-century edifice mixingRomanesque andGothic elements. As of 2019[update], Fole Church belongs to Väskindeparish in Norra Gotlandspastorat, along with the churches inBro,Väskinde,Lokrume,Hejnum andBäl.[7][8]
One of theasteroids in theAsteroid belt,10129 Fole, isnamed after this place.[9]
A number of goldbracteates and otherViking Age jewelry has been found at Fole.[10]
Fole Idrottsförening ("Fole Sports Club") is one of the oldest on Gotland, founded in 1894.[11]
