Flender Werke was a Germanshipbuilding company, located inLübeck.[1] It was founded in 1917 as a branch ofBrückenbau Flender AG ofBenrath on the Rhine. In 1926, it became a fully independent business and was renamedLübecker Flenderwerke AG. It went on to become one of the largestshipyards in Germany, building nearly 700 ships in all.[2]
DuringWorld War II, Flender Werke built 2Type II and 40Type VIIU-boats for theKriegsmarine.[3]
After the war, Flender Werke continued to buildmerchant ships, and in 1973 it was renamedFlender Werft AG. In 2002, it was forced to close because ofinsolvency.
