TheFinland State Forest is astate forest located near the unincorporated community ofFinland inLake andCook counties,Minnesota. Of the over 30,000 acres (12,000 ha), theMinnesota Department of Natural Resourcesmanages a third of the land. The federalUnited States Forest Service manages roughly a quarter of the total forest acreage, as its boundary overlaps in part with that ofSuperior National Forest. The remainder is split between Cook and Lake County agencies, and private landowners.
Outdoor recreation opportunities in the forest includecamping andhiking throughout the forest,canoeing,kayaking, andboating on the numerous lakes. Cold-water streams and lakes maketrout fishing a popular activity. A large amount of thecamping traffic is due to the forest's location 6 miles (9.7 km) from the popularTettegouche State Park. Additionally,trails located throughout the forest accommodate a wide variety of activities. These include 25 miles (40 km) designated formountain biking, 5.6 miles (9.0 km) for Class IAll-terrain vehicle (ATV) use, 1 mile (1.6 km) foroff-highway motorcycling, the 21 miles (34 km) Moose WalkSnowmobile Trail, as well ascross-country skiing.[1]
Isabella 14W is a weather station in Finland State Forest, located near Sand Lake and theSand Lake Peatland Scientific and Natural Area.[2]
