Intypography (specificallytypeface anatomy), a stroke can end in a number of ways. Examples include:

  • Theserif, including:
    • The regular serif
    • The bracketed serif
    • The half-serif
  • Theterminal, which is any stroke that doesnot end in a serif
    • Thefinial, a tapered or curved end[1]
    • Theswash, an extended or decorative flourish that replaces a serif or terminal on a letter
    • Thelachrymal (or teardrop), as found inCaslon,Galliard, andBaskerville[2]
    • Theball, as found inBodoni andClarendon[3]
    • Thebeak, a sharp spur, as found inPerpetua, Pontifex, and Ignatius.[3] Also defined as the triangularserifs on the straight lines of capitals like E, F and Z.[4]
    • Hooked
    • Pear-shaped
