Thenational anthem of Palestine, known by itsincipit as "Fidāʾiyy" (Arabic:فدائي,lit. 'Fedayeen warrior'), was officially adopted in 1996 by thePalestine Liberation Organization,[1][2][3] replacing the Arabic patriotic song "Mawtini". It was written bySaid Al Muzayin and set to music byAli Ismael in 1965.

Etymology

Main article:Palestinian fedayeen

The wordfidāʾiyy (Arabic:فدائي;plural:فدائيونfidāʾiyyūn(standard) orفدائيينfidāʾiyyīn(informal), often rendered in English as 'fedayeen') means 'sacrifice' or 'one who sacrifices himself' (a literal translation offidāʾiyyīn might be "martyrs"). ThePalestinian fedayeen are militants or guerrillas of a nationalist orientation from among the Palestinian people. Most Palestinians consider the fedayeen to be "freedom fighters".

History

The anthem was adopted by thePalestine Liberation Organization in 1996,[2] in accordance with Article 31 of thePalestinian Declaration of Independence from 1988.[not verified in body] It replaced "Mawtini". It was written bySaid Al Muzayin (a.k.a. Fata Al Thawra, "boy of the revolution"), while its music was composed by Egyptian maestroAli Ismael. It was known as the "anthem of the Palestinian redemption".
