Fazail Rahim ogly Agamali (Azerbaijani:Fəzail Rəhim oğlu Ağamalı; born 27 August 1947) is anAzerbaijani politician, historian and professor with aD.Sc. academic degree.[1] He is the founder and leader of theMotherland Party.[2] Agamali was aMember of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan from 1995 to 2024.[3] He served as Deputy and Acting Minister ofLabour and Social Protection of the Population between 1992 and 1994.[4]
Fazail Agamali was born in theSisian district ofArmenian SSR on 27 August 1947. He got his first education inDastakert high school.
He has completed his undergraduate studies atBaku State University between 1966 and 1971. During his studies, Agamali became a member of the secretanti-Soviet student organization, which was demanding independence toAzerbaijan.[5]
In the early 70s, theKGB continually monitored him due to hisanti-Soviet activities.[6][7]
In 1972, Fazail Agamali was admitted to the graduate school ofBaku State University and in 1980, he received the academic degree ofCandidate of Historical Sciences.[8]
He has given lectures inNakhchivan State University,Azerbaijan Technological University andAzerbaijan State University of Economics as anassociate professor from 1973 to 1990.[8]
In 2005, Fazail Agamali obtained theD.Sc academic degree in history.[8]
Fazail Agamali took an active role in the independence movement inAzerbaijan between 1988 and 1990, and he was a prominent figure of theAzerbaijan Popular Front. However, several controversies arose between him and other movement leaders after theBlack January incidents. The process concluded with the resignation of Fazail Agamali from the Popular Front. After these developments, supporters of Agamali demanded the formation of a new political party. Hence, on 24 November 1990 founding congress of theMotherland Party took place and Fazail Agamali was elected as the chairman of the party.[9]
Fazail Agamali had served as DeputyMinister of Labour and Social Protection of the Population in 1992–1993 and ActingMinister of Labour and Social Protection of the Population in 1993–1994.[10]
Fazail Agamali has been elected as theMember of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan in1995,2000,2005,2010,2015,2020 parliamentary elections.[11]
Agamali is a member of the Committee on Legal Policy and State Building, and deputy chairman of the Disciplinary Commission of theMember of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan.[3] Furthermore, he is the leader of the Working Group for theAzerbaijani-Turkmen Interparliamentary Relations.[12]
Fazail Agamali is married and has three children.
On 25 August 2017,MP Fazail Agamali was awardedShohrat Order by thePresident of Azerbaijan.[13] Agamali was awardedFor service to the Fatherland Order on 25 August 2022 by thePresident of Azerbaijan.[14]
