Fairy-tale opera may refer to any of several traditions ofopera based onfairy tales.

Opéra féerie is a French genre ofopera oropéra-ballet, often with elements of magic in their stories.^[1]
The English genre of "fairy opera" includesGilbert and Sullivan'sIolanthe
The German genre ofMärchenoper (fairy-tale opera) has its roots in Italian opera.^[2]Hänsel und Gretel is considered a key work of the genre.^[3]
