History

[edit]

Until 2005, the club was organized as handball department of Reinickendorfer Füchse. For the 2005–06 season, the branding was changed to Füchse Berlin, in an effort to establish the club as a leading sports team of Berlin alongsideHertha BSC (football),Eisbären Berlin (ice hockey) andAlba Berlin (basketball). This coincided with the move toMax-Schmeling-Halle (Berlin's second biggest indoor sports venue), which is dubbedFuchsbau (burrow in English). In 2007, the Füchse secured the championship in theZweite Handball-Bundeliga, the second highest German league, thus advancing toHandball-Bundesliga, which the club has stayed in ever since. In 2014 the team won theDHB-Pokal, its first major trophy by defeatingSG Flensburg-Handewitt 22–21.[2]

As German cup winners they qualified for the2014–15 EHF Cup, which they won to gain their first international title. As winner of the EHF Cup the Füchse earned a wild card spot for the2015 IHF Super Globe, which they also won.

In the2024-25 season they won their first German championship ever.[3] Their coachJaron Siewert became the youngest coach ever to win the Bundesliga at 31 years.[4]

Despite the previous season's success, the club decided to fireJaron Siewert just two matches into the following season along with sporting directorStefan Kretzschmar after a public disagreement between them managing director Bob Hanning.[5] To replace him, the club hired Danish coachNicolej Krickau.[6]
