Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFé) (lit.'International Feline Federation') is afederation offelidae animals (mainlycats). The federation currently has 42 members from 40 countries.[1]FIFé is one of the nine members of theWorld Cat Congress.[2]

History

[edit]

It was founded by "French cat-loverMadame Marguérite Miggy Ravel" in 1949.[3]

The federation was unofficially started in 1949 inParis, France, at a meeting between theFédération Féline Française (French Cat Federation), theRoyal Cat Society of Flanders, and theAssociazione Nazionale Felina Italiana (Italian National Feline Association).[4] At the organisation's first general assembly, inGhent, Belgium, the federation was officially founded. For the occasion, all participants received a cat shaped statuette, in pink sandstone, that Marguerite Ravel had commissioned from the sculptorJan Martel.[5]

The original name wasFédération Internationale Féline d'Europe (FIFE). In 1972, theBrazilian Cat Club (Portuguese:Clube Brasileiro do Gato) joined, making it necessary to change theEuro-centric name of the federation. Thed'Europe (lit.'of Europe') was dropped, and the abbreviation was changed to FIFé.[5]

Recognized breeds

[edit]
