TheInternational Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) uses abreve˘⟩ to indicate a speech sound (usually avowel) withextra-shortduration. That is,[ă] is a very short vowel with the quality of[a]. An example from English is the shortschwa of the wordpolice[pə̆ˈliˑs].[1] This is typical ofvowel reduction.

Before the 1989Kiel Convention, the breve was used for anon-syllabic vowel (that is, part of adiphthong), which is now indicated by aninverted breve placed under the vowel letter, as ineye[aɪ̯]. It is also sometimes used for anyflap consonants missing dedicated symbols in the IPA, since a flap is in effect a very briefstop.
