British comics writer
Al Ewing (/ˈ j uː ɪ ŋ / YOO -ing ; born 12 August 1977) is aBritish comics writer who has mainly worked in thesmall press , for2000 AD , and forMarvel Comics .
Al Ewing began his career writing stories in the four-pageFuture Shocks format for2000 AD and moved on to regular stints onJudge Dredd [ 1] (2008–2015), for which his 2010 story "Doctor What?" markedBrendan McCarthy 's return to2000 AD . They later worked together on a new series entitledThe Zaucer of Zilk .[ 2] [ 3] Ewing worked onDamnation Station andZombo , the latter illustrated byHenry Flint , which was collected intrade paperback in 2010.
Ewing has also contributed toSolar Wind ,FutureQuake , andThe End Is Nigh . He created themobile comic Murderdrome withP. J. Holden .
In May 2007, Ewing created the comedy blog "The Diary of Ralph Dibny", writing as the titularDC Comics superhero (also known asElongated Man ), Dibny's therapist, or as the even more obscure DC heroRichard Dragon , as they react to the events of each week's issue of the comic book52 .[ 4]
Breaking intoAmerican comic books , Ewing was also picked byGarth Ennis to provide a six-issue arc onJennifer Blood , published byDynamite Entertainment ,[ 5] [ 6] and a spin-off seriesThe Ninjettes .[ 7]
His debut prose novelPax Britannia: El Sombra , published byAbaddon Books in 2007, features a mysterious Mexican hero fighting back against the menace of steam-powered Nazis.[ 8] It is set in the samesteampunk alternate history as the other novels from thePax Britannia series. Three other novels have been published since, with a fifth on the way.
Ewing wroteMighty Avengers andLoki: Agent of Asgard forMarvel Comics [ 9] and co-wrote the first year of the Eleventh DoctorDoctor Who title withRob Williams forTitan Comics .[ 10]
Ewing has since writtenNew Avengers ,U.S.Avengers ,Ultimates ,Rocket ,Royals , andThe Immortal Hulk , all for Marvel.The Immortal Hulk was a nominee for the 2019Eisner Award in the "Best Continuing Series" category,[ 11] and had earned publisher Marvel Comics a Diamond Gem Award the previous year as "Best New Comic Book Series."[ 12]
In 2021, Ewing won theGLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book at the32nd GLAAD Media Awards for his work onEmpyre and received an additional nomination in 2021 and one in 2022 forGuardians of the Galaxy .[ 13] In June 2021, it was announced that Ewing would serve as co-writer ofVenom (vol. 7) alongsideRam V , withBryan Hitch serving as the initial artist and the series launching in November that same year.[ 14]
During Marvel'sKrakoan Age , Ewing was the writer on several X-Men titles such as theongoing seriesS.W.O.R.D. (2020–2021), the flagship seriesX-Men Red (2022–2023) and thelimited series Resurrection of Magneto (2024).[ 15] [ 16] [ 17] [ 18] In May 2023, it was announced that Ewing would writeThe Immortal Thor , with Martín Cóccolo serving as artist and debuting in August that same year.[ 19]
In July 2024, it was announced atSan Diego Comic-Con that Ewing would contribute to theAbsolute Universe atDC Comics by penning the seriesAbsolute Green Lantern , with Jahnoy Lindsay serving as artist and set for release in 2025.[ 20] In August 2024, it was announced that Ewing would be working together with artist Carlos Gomez for the seriesAll-New Venom . The series followsDylan Brock in the aftermath of theVenom War trying to discover who Venom's new host is, with the first issue set to begin publication in December.[ 21] In September 2024, it was announced that Ewing would pen the ongoing seriesMetamorpho: The Element Man withSteve Lieber illustrating and set to debut in December that same year.[ 22]
Ewing has a brother, Tom Ewing, who writes critical essays on music and pop culture. He created the websiteFreaky Trigger ,[ 23] to which Al was an occasional contributor in its early days.[ 24]
