Scottish actor (born 1971)
Ewan Gordon McGregor (/ˈ j uː ə n / YOO -ən ;[ 1] born 31 March 1971) is a Scottish actor.His accolades include aGolden Globe Award and aPrimetime Emmy Award . In 2013, he was appointedOfficer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to drama and charity.[ 2]
While studying drama at theGuildhall School of Music and Drama , McGregor began his career with a leading role in the British seriesLipstick on Your Collar (1993).[ 3] He gained international recognition for starring as drug addictMark Renton inTrainspotting (1996) and asObi-Wan Kenobi in theStar Wars prequel trilogy (1999–2005). His career progressed with starring roles in the musicalMoulin Rouge! (2001), action filmBlack Hawk Down (2001), fantasy filmBig Fish (2003), and thrillerAngels and Demons (2009). He gained praise for his performances in the thrillerThe Ghost Writer (2010) and romantic comedySalmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011).
McGregor made his directorial debut with the crime filmAmerican Pastoral (2016), in which he also starred. For his dual role as brothersRay andEmmit Stussy in thethird season of the anthology seriesFargo (2017), he won theGolden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film . He voicedLumière inBeauty and the Beast (2017), and played thetitle role inChristopher Robin (2018),Dan Torrance inDoctor Sleep (2019), andBlack Mask inBirds of Prey (2020). He reprised his role as Kenobi in the 2022 miniseriesObi-Wan Kenobi , and won aPrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his portrayal of fashion designerHalston in the miniseriesHalston (2021).[ 4]
McGregor has also starred in theatre productions ofGuys and Dolls (2005–2007) andOthello (2007–2008). He has been involved in charity work and has served as an ambassador forUNICEF UK since 2004.
McGregor was born on 31 March 1971 inPerth , Scotland, and was raised in nearbyCrieff .[ 5] [ 6] [ 7] [ 8] His mother, Carol Diane (née Lawson), is a retired teacher at Crieff High School and latterly deputy head teacher at Kingspark School inDundee .[ 9] [ 10] His father, James Charles Stewart "Jim" McGregor, is a retiredphysical education teacher and careers master at the independentMorrison's Academy in Crieff.[ 11] [ 12] [ 13] He has an older brother, Colin (born 1969), a formerTornado GR4 pilot in theRoyal Air Force .[ 14] His uncle is actorDenis Lawson [ 3] [ 15] and his aunt by marriage was actressSheila Gish , which makes him a step-cousin of Gish's actress daughters, Kay Curram andLou Gish .[ 16]
For his education McGregor attendedMorrison's Academy . After leaving school at the age of 16, he worked as a stagehand atPerth Theatre and studied a foundation course in drama atKirkcaldy College of Technology,[ 17] [ 18] before moving toLondon to study drama at theGuildhall School of Music and Drama when he was 18 years old.[ 3]
Film and television [ edit ] McGregor's costume fromStar Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts Six months prior to his graduation from Guildhall, McGregor began a leading role inDennis Potter 's six-partChannel 4 seriesLipstick on Your Collar (1993).[ 3] Not long afterwards, he starred in theBBC adaptation ofScarlet and Black (also 1993) withRachel Weisz and made his film debut inBill Forsyth 'sBeing Human (1994).[ 19] For his role in the thrillerShallow Grave (also 1994), he won anEmpire Award .[ 20] The film was his first collaboration with directorDanny Boyle .[ 3] He had a major role in the 1996 Channel 4 comedy-drama filmBrassed Off , written and directed byMark Herman . His international breakthrough followed with the role of heroin addictMark Renton in Boyle'sTrainspotting (1996), an adaptation ofIrvine Welsh 'snovel of the same name .[ 3] [ 19]
McGregor played the male romantic lead role in the British filmLittle Voice (1998). He was cast as the youngObi-Wan Kenobi in theStar Wars prequel trilogy , released between 1999 and 2005.[ 21] Kenobi was originally played byAlec Guinness in thefirstStar Wars trilogy .[ 3] McGregor's uncle,Denis Lawson , had playedWedge Antilles in the original trilogy.[ 22] While the prequels received mixed reviews, McGregor's performance was well received.[ 23] McGregor said making the prequels was difficult, as he had to act mostly againstgreen screens and the dialogue was "not exactlyShakespeare ". He also stated that the negative reaction to the films had been difficult.[ 21]
McGregor at the Cannes Film Festival in 2001 McGregor starred inMoulin Rouge! (2001) as the young poet Christian, who falls in love with the terminally-ill courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman ), for which his performance was widely praised and nabbed McGregor his firstGolden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination. He also appeared inRidley Scott 's war filmBlack Hawk Down (2001) as John Grimes. He starred alongsideRenée Zellweger inDown with Love (2003).[ 3] [ 24] He also portrayed the younger Edward Bloom inTim Burton 's critically acclaimed filmBig Fish (2003) alongsideAlbert Finney ,Jessica Lange ,Alison Lohman andBilly Crudup . In the same period, he also received critical acclaim for his portrayal of an amoral drifter mixed up with murder in the dramaYoung Adam (also 2003), which co-starredTilda Swinton .[ 25] [ 26]
McGregor voiced two successful animated features; he played the robotRodney Copperbottom inRobots , which also featured the voices ofHalle Berry andRobin Williams ,[ 27] and he voiced the lead character inGary Chapman 'sValiant (both 2005), alongsideJim Broadbent ,John Cleese andRicky Gervais .[ 28] Also around this time, McGregor played two roles – one aclone of the other – oppositeScarlett Johansson inMichael Bay 's science fiction action thriller filmThe Island (2005). He also headlinedMarc Forster 's 2005 filmStay , a psychological thriller co-starringNaomi Watts andRyan Gosling .[ 29] [ 30]
McGregor at the premiere ofThe Men Who Stare at Goats at theToronto International Film Festival in 2009 He narrated theFulldome productionAstronaut (2006), created for theNational Space Centre .[ 31] Around the same time, he also narrated theSTV showJetSet (also 2006), a six-part series following the lives of trainee pilots and navigators atRAF Lossiemouth as they undergo a gruelling six-month course learning to fly theTornado GR4 , the RAF's primary attack aircraft.[ 32] McGregor starred oppositeColin Farrell in theWoody Allen filmCassandra's Dream (2007),[ 19] [ 33] and he co-starred withJim Carrey inI Love You Phillip Morris and appeared inAmelia (both 2009) alongsideHilary Swank . He played "the ghost" – the unnamed main character – inRoman Polanski 's political thrillerThe Ghost Writer (2010). He portrayedCamerlengo Patrick McKenna inRon Howard 's mystery thrillerAngels & Demons (also 2009), the film adaptation ofDan Brown 'snovel of the same name and a sequel to Howard'sThe Da Vinci Code , co-starringTom Hanks asRobert Landon . In 2011, McGregor starred in the British comedySalmon Fishing in the Yemen directed byLasse Hallström and co-starringEmily Blunt andKristin Scott Thomas , for which he received his secondGolden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination. At the same year, he was awarded with the SIFF Golden Space Needle Award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting at the 2011Seattle International Film Festival .[ 34]
In 2012, he was a member of the Jury for the Main Competition at the2012 Cannes Film Festival .[ 35] At theSan Sebastián International Film Festival , he was awarded theDonostia Lifetime Achievement Award and became the youngest recipient of the award.[ 36] The same year, he also starred in the disaster drama filmThe Impossible oppositeNaomi Watts andTom Holland . In 2013, McGregor starred alongsideMeryl Streep andJulia Roberts inAugust: Osage County , which was based onTracy Letts 'sPulitzer Prize -winningplay of the same name .[ 37]
McGregor starred in the action comedy filmMortdecai (2015), alongsideJohnny Depp andPaul Bettany .Robbie Collin ofThe Daily Telegraph felt the film was "psychotically unfunny".[ 38] He made his directorial debut withAmerican Pastoral (2016), in which he also starred.[ 39]
In 2017, he reprised his role as Mark Renton inT2 Trainspotting .[ 40] McGregor playedLumière (originally voiced byJerry Orbach in the1991 animated film ) in the live-action adaptation ofDisney's Beauty and the Beast , directed byBill Condon , with an ensemble cast featuringEmma Watson andDan Stevens in leading roles, alongsideLuke Evans ,Kevin Kline ,Josh Gad ,Stanley Tucci ,Ian McKellen , andEmma Thompson . Filming began in May 2015 atShepperton Studios inLondon , and the movie was released in March 2017.[ 41] He then starred inFX anthology series in thethird season ofFargo (both 2017), which garnered him aGolden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his dual performance of Emmit Stussy and Ray Stussy at the75th Golden Globe Awards .[ 42] In 2018, McGregor starred as the adult version of thetitular character inChristopher Robin , a live-action adaptation of Disney'sWinnie the Pooh franchise directed byMarc Forster and starred alongsideHayley Atwell .[ 43]
In 2019, McGregor starred as the olderDanny Torrance inDoctor Sleep , the film adaptation ofStephen King 's novelof the same name .[ 44] In 2020, he appeared oppositeMargot Robbie inWarner Bros. 'DC Comics filmBirds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) , directed byCathy Yan , as the main villainRoman Sionis / Black Mask .[ 45]
On 23 August 2019, Lucasfilm announced that McGregor would reprise his role asObi-Wan Kenobi in a newStar Wars television series , due for release onDisney+ in 2022.[ 46]
In 2021, McGregor played the American fashion designerHalston in the eponymously titledminiseries for Netflix, based on the candid biographySimply Halston by journalistSteven Gaines . McGregor was also billed as executive producer, jointly withRyan Murphy .[ 47]
In 2022, McGregor voicedSebastián J. Cricket , the conscience and narrator, inPinocchio . The film was directed byGuillermo del Toro and premiered onNetflix .[ 48]
In September 2024, McGregor received his star on theHollywood Walk of Fame .[ 49]
From November 1998 to March 1999, McGregor starred as Malcolm Scrawdyke in a revival ofDavid Halliwell 'sLittle Malcolm and His Struggles Against the Eunuchs , directed by his uncle,Denis Lawson . The production was first staged at theHampstead Theatre before transferring to theComedy Theatre in London's West End.[ 50] In November 2001, McGregor made a cameo appearance inThe Play What I Wrote .[ 51]
From June 2005 to April 2007, McGregor starred alongsideJane Krakowski ,Douglas Hodge andJenna Russell in theDonmar Warehouse revival ofGuys and Dolls after it transferred to thePiccadilly Theatre in London.[ 52] He played the leading role ofSky Masterson . McGregor received theLastMinute.com award for Best Actor for his performance in 2005,[ 53] and he was nominated for aLaurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2007.[ 54]
From December 2007 to February 2008, McGregor starred asIago inOthello at theDonmar Warehouse alongsideChiwetel Ejiofor asOthello andKelly Reilly asDesdemona .[ 55] [ 56] He reprised the role onBBC Radio 3 in May 2008.[ 55]
McGregor made hisBroadway debut in a 2014 production ofTom Stoppard 'sThe Real Thing at theAmerican Airlines Theatre . He was cast in the role of Henry and starred alongsideMaggie Gyllenhaal andCynthia Nixon .[ 57]
A motorcyclist since his youth, in 2004 McGregor undertook an international motorcycling trip with his best friendCharley Boorman , accompanied by cameramanClaudio von Planta and a support crew. From mid-April to the end of July, they travelled from London toNew York viacentral Europe , Ukraine,Kazakhstan ,Mongolia , Russia, Canada, and the United States onBMW R1150GS motorbikes, over a cumulative distance of 22,345 miles (35,960 km).[ 58] The trip included visits to severalUNICEF programmes along the route, and formed the basis of a television series and a best-selling book, both calledLong Way Round .[ 59]
McGregor and Boorman reunited with this team in 2007 for another international motorcycle trip, fromJohn o' Groats in Scotland toCape Town in South Africa.[ 59] The journey lasted from May until August, and yielded another book and TV series, titledLong Way Down .[ 59]
McGregor appeared in a two-partBBC documentary in 2012 entitledEwan McGregor: Cold Chain Mission in which he travels by motorbike, boat, plane, and foot to delivervaccines to children in remote parts ofIndia ,Nepal and theRepublic of Congo . The trip was part of his work as aUNICEF Ambassador.
In 2019, McGregor and Boorman – with their principal support crew from the previous twoLong Way journeys – undertook a third international trip, this time onHarley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycles. From September to December, they rode fromPatagonia , Argentina toCalifornia , United States,[ 60] which was documented in the 2020 seriesLong Way Up .[ 61] [ 62]
McGregor is involved in charity work, includingUNICEF UK since 2004 andGO Campaign . During theLong Way Round journey in 2004, McGregor and his travelling companions saw some of UNICEF's work in Ukraine,Kazakhstan , and Mongolia,[ 59] and during theLong Way Down trip in 2007, he and Charley Boorman did some work for UNICEF in Africa. McGregor hosted the annual Hollywood gala for the GO Campaign in 2009 and 2010. He has worked with theChildren's Hospice Association Scotland , as featured inLong Way Down . In 2012, he travelled with UNICEFimmunization workers to remote parts of India, Nepal and the Republic of Congo for aBBC2 documentary entitledEwan McGregor: Cold Chain Mission .[ 63]
In June 2015, McGregor readHans Christian Andersen 's "The Little Match Girl " for the children's fairy tales app GivingTales in aid of UNICEF, together with other prominent figures such as SirRoger Moore ,Stephen Fry , DameJoan Collins ,Joanna Lumley , and SirMichael Caine .[ 64]
McGregor in 2022 McGregor divides his time betweenLos Angeles ,California ,[ 65] andSt John's Wood ,London .[ 66] He is also a fan of English football teamManchester City .[ 67]
In 2007, on an episode ofParkinson , McGregor said he had been ateetotaller for the last seven years. He also mentioned this in an interview with theIrish Independent in 2008, stating that he would often turn up to sets drunk or hung over in the late 1990s, and that he decided to stop altogether to avoid spiralling down further.[ 68]
In 2008, McGregor had acancerous mole removed from below his right eye.[ 69]
In September 2020, after travelling through Chile for the documentaryLong Way Up , he revealed that one of his great-grandfathers, John "Juan" Charles McIndoe, was born in Chile to Scottish parents while his father worked with the American engineers in the construction of the railways at the end of the 19th century. Later, John went toGlasgow and worked as a wine importer and diplomat.[ 70] [ 71]
McGregor became anaturalised US citizen after 2016 so he would be able to vote in the2020 US presidential election .[ 72] During his journey onLong Way Up , he travelled entirely on his US passport.[ 73]
He is a fan of theFremantle Dockers in theAustralian Football League .[ 74]
Family and relationships [ edit ] McGregor married Eve Mavrakis, a French-Greek Jewishproduction designer whom he met on the set ofKavanagh QC , in 1995.[ 75] [ 76] [ 77] [ 78] [ 3] Together they have four daughters, two of them adopted, one astreet child fromMongolia he met while travelling inLong Way Round .[ 5] [ 79] [ 80] [ 81]
With his children raised in Mavrakis'sJewish faith , McGregor said in 2016, "My involvement in religion has more to do with the Jewish faith now and not theChristian faith, which I was very vaguely brought up in."[ 82] McGregor has a heart and dagger tattoo of the names of Mavrakis and their daughters on his right arm.[ 24] [ 83] [ 84] McGregor has appeared alongside his daughterClara inChristopher Robin ,The Birthday Cake andBleeding Love .[ 85]
On 19 January 2018, having been separated since May 2017, McGregor filed for divorce from Mavrakis, citingirreconcilable differences ;[ 86] [ 87] the divorce was finalised on 13 August 2020.[ 88]
In May 2017, McGregor began a relationship with American actressMary Elizabeth Winstead , whom he met on the set ofFargo .[ 89] Their son was born in June 2021.[ 90] [ 91] McGregor and Winstead married in April 2022.[ 92]
McGregor was an outspoken critic ofBrexit . Although opposed toScottish independence from the United Kingdom in the2014 Scottish referendum , McGregor later declared during an interview that he would have voted for independence if he had been able to cast his vote the day after the United Kingdom left theEuropean Union .[ 93] In 2020 he voiced his support for Scottish independence, saying that "it's time".[ 94] [ 95] [ 96]
McGregor identifies as afeminist .[ 97] In 2009, he said, "Women are always expected to be naked in films, but I like to try and do it so they are not naked—have the women not be naked. It's a feminist thing that I do."[ 98] In 2017, he refused to appear onPiers Morgan 's show after Morgan made disparaging remarks about the participants of the2017 Women's March .[ 98] [ 99]
In October 2023, McGregor signed an open letter byArtists4Ceasefire during theIsrael–Hamas war .[ 100]
McGregor was ranked number 36 onEmpire magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list in 1997.[ 101] In a 2004 poll for theBBC , he was named the fourth most influential person inBritish culture .[ 102] [ 103] IndieWire named McGregor one of the best actors never to have received anAcademy Award nomination.[ 104]
