Career

[edit]

Born inCampo Grande, Everson began his youth career atPortuguesa de Desportos in 1989, followed by a six-year spell atParaná. After a few months withAmérica (SP) in early 1997, he moved toGirondins de Bordeaux to play for their reserve team in theCFA, scoring 16 goals in 9 matches.[1][2] That record attracted the interest ofParis Saint-Germain, who signed him that same year.[2] After some training sessions withRicardo Gomes, PSG sold him toServette, where he stayed until the end of 1997.[1][2] He then joinedRWDM Brussels in the start of 1998, and stayed there for 18 months, a period he said it turned him into an adult.[1][2] In the summer of 1999, Everson moved to German football and spent three years there, two of those in the regional leagues, first atEintracht Braunschweig, thenArminia Bielefeld and finallyVfL Osnabrück.[1] In 2002, he joined thefreshly promotedNice, and became an undisputed starter, playing 60 matches over two seasons, scoring eleven goals, seven from free-kicks.[1] His performances led to a move toBenfica, who signed him on a four-year contract in July 2004.[3]Record wrote that Benfica paid Nice €1.2M to sign him.[4] Everson was described by his former teammate,Lilian Laslandes as a strong, tactically disciplined player that could operate either as defensive or central midfielder; and possessed a powerful left foot.[1]

Although, there was concerns that he was still suffering from apubalgia brought from Nice, he was declared match-fit on 9 August,[5] and made his debut for Benfica in theSupertaça Cândido de Oliveira againstPorto.[6] His first start happened in late October, in a home win againstOriental for theTaça de Portugal,[7] followed by 11 minutes againstVitória de Setúbal, in hisPrimeira Liga debut.[8] However, after months of light treatment to his pubalgia, it was decided that he needed surgery, so he was operated in mid December. with full recovery in a month.[9][10] After overcoming the injury, Everson was called up byGiovanni Trapattoni on some occasions, but did not play again.[11] Because of the 11 minutes played with Setúbal, he too won theleague title.[12] The following season, Everson was expected to remain with the first-team,[12] but he was deemed surplus byRonald Koeman, and ultimately demoted to thereserve team.[13][14]

After half a season competing in thethird tier, he was loaned toBSC Young Boys for the remainder of the season.[15][16] At Young Boys, Everson helped them reach theSwiss Cup Final, which they lost toFC Sion on penalties.[17] He returned to Benfica in the following season and spent the entire season without competing.[18] In July 2007, he moved toNeuchâtel Xamax on a permanent deal,[19] scoring his first goal on 1 September, againstGrasshopper.[20] After leaving Neuchâtel Xamax, he played briefly atÉtoile du Sahel,[21] returned to Germany to play forTuS Koblenz,[22] and closed his career at age 34, inGueugnon.[23] In 2011, Everson returned to Nice to work in their media department; he regularly appears as a host and interviewer in videos on the official website.[24]
