Eveno-Bytantaysky National District (Russian:Эве́но-Бытанта́йский национа́льный улу́с;Even:Эвэн Бытантай буган;Yakut:Эбээн-Бытантай улууһа,romanized: Ebeen-Bıtantay uluuha) is an administrative[1] and municipal[4] district (raion, orulus), one of thethirty-four in theSakha Republic,Russia. The area of the district is 52,300 square kilometers (20,200 sq mi).[2] Itsadministrative center is therural locality (aselo) ofBatagay-Alyta.[2] As of the2010 Census, the total population of the district was 2,867, with the population of Batagay-Alyta accounting for 63.9% of that number.[3]

History

The district was established on April 21, 1989,[2] when its territory was split out ofVerkhoyansky District.[8] The district's name refers to its designation as anational (ethnic) district for theEvens, who comprised 32.35% of the population in 1989, as well as its location on theBytantay River.[citation needed]

Geography

The district is located within theArctic Circle, between theLena andYana Rivers. The western section of the district is dominated by theVerkhoyansk Range, the north and east—by theKular Mountains.

Administrative and municipal status

Within theframework of administrative divisions, Eveno-Bytantaysky National District is one of thethirty-four in the republic.[1] The district is divided into threerural okrugs (naslegs) which comprise fourrural localities.[2] As amunicipal division, the district is incorporated asEveno-Bytantaysky Municipal District.[4] Its three rural okrugs are incorporated into three rural settlements within the municipal district.[5] Theselo ofBatagay-Alyta serves as theadministrative center of both the administrative[2] and municipal[4] district.

Economy

The economy of the district depends mainly on agriculture such asreindeer herding and the breeding ofcattle andhorses.[10] The district is among the most inaccessible territories of the republic.
