Evanna Patricia Lynch was born on 16 August 1991 to Marguerite and Donal Lynch and was raised inTermonfeckin,County Louth, on the east coast of Ireland.[1][2] She has two older sisters and a younger brother.[3] Her maternal uncle isDeclan Kiberd, ascholar ofIrish literature who is a professor at theUniversity of Notre Dame.[4] Lynch was raised aCatholic.[5]

Lynch read theHarry Potter series for the first time at age eight and became a fan,[6][7][8] reading and writingfan fiction about the series[6] and sending letters to the author,J. K. Rowling.[1] She was educated at Cartown National School in Termonfeckin until June 2004 and then moved toOur Lady's College inDrogheda,[2][7] where her father was the deputy principal.[9][10] In 2008, she studied speculative fiction and drama at theCentre for the Talented Youth of Ireland, asummer school forgifted teens, inGlasnevin.[11][12] While on theHarry Potter film set, Lynch was tutored for at least three hours a day.[13] In September 2010, she attended theInstitute of Education to repeat herLeaving Certificate.[14]

Lynch developed an eating disorder at age eleven. She was hospitalised several times foranorexia, and stated that theHarry Potter novels were the only thing that could distract from her condition. During this period, she often wrote to Rowling, stating that "her books and her kindness really made me want to live again."[15] Rowling wrote then-11-year-old Lynch "incredible, wise letters" back.[16] During the release of the fifth bookOrder of the Phoenix in June 2003, Lynch was hospitalised and her family consulted with the book's publisher and the hospital; she was subsequently allowed to leave for an hour and collect a signed copy of the book.[17]

Career

[edit]

2006–2011: Beginnings andHarry Potter series

[edit]

In January 2006, Lynch auditioned at acasting call in London for the role ofLuna Lovegood inHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth film in the series adapted from the books.[18][19] After auditioning against 15,000 other girls,[18] and a subsequent screen test with lead actorDaniel Radcliffe, she was cast at age 14.[13] Producers were impressed with her affinity for the character;David Heyman said: "The others could play Luna; Evanna Lynchis Luna."[20] Although uninvolved in the casting process, Rowling believed that Lynch was perfect for the role.[21] She had never acted professionally before theHarry Potter series, her experience having been limited to school plays.[22] While filmingHarry Potter, Lynch also made and helped design a number of fashion accessories for her character.[10][23][24][25]

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was Lynch's debut screen performance in 2007. The film was a box office hit and garnered favourable reviews.[26][27] Critics praised the performances of the supporting cast; Lynch was often singled out for acclaim:The New York Times called her performance "spellbinding",[28] and Jane Watkins ofCountry Life said she "[brought] an appealing sweetness to her character that's not so developed in the book".[29] She also voiced the character inthe film's tie-in video game.[30] Lynch reprised her role inHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009). The film was critically and commercially successful.[31][32]Wesley Morris ofThe Boston Globe wrote that Lynch "combats the movie's occasional sluggishness with a hilarious sluggishness of her own",[33] andMichael Dwyer ofThe Irish Times called her the best Irish actress of 2009 for her work on the film.[34] Her performance earned herScream Award andYoung Artist Award nominations,[35][36] and she returned inthe film's tie-in video game.[37]

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 was released in 2010 to positive reviews and box office success.[38][39] TheBoston Herald commented that Lynch "is still delightfully lunar,"[40] whileQuickflix criticised the film, noting that "the delightful Evanna Lynch is brutally underutilised".[41] She reprised her role inthe film's tie-in video game.[42] Lynch appeared in the role for the final time inHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. The film opened to critical acclaim and went on to become thefifth highest-grossing film of all time.[43][44]The Seattle Times wrote that Lynch "continues to be all-that-and-a-radish-earring as the ever-wafting Luna Lovegood,"[45] andOrlando Sentinel named her as "maybe" one of his "favourite players in the finale."[46] She again reprised her role inthe film's tie-in video game.[47] In August 2012 atLeakycon in Chicago she joined the cast ofStarKid to play Luna Lovegood in a script reading of the thirdHarry Potter parody musical,A Very Potter Senior Year (the other two beingA Very Potter Musical andA Very Potter Sequel).

Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling gave a speech during the premiere ofDeathly Hallows – Part 2 in London, where she stated that there were seven major cast members in the series, whom she referred to as "The Big Seven", and she named Lynch as one of the seven members, along withDaniel Radcliffe,Rupert Grint,Emma Watson,Tom Felton,Matthew Lewis andBonnie Wright.[48] Rowling has maintained that, of all the actors in the film series, Lynch had the most influence on how the respective character was subsequently written; in 2012, she toldCharlie Rose that when writing the final books, "I saw her. [She] got in my head. I even heard her voice when I was writing Luna."[49]

J.K. Rowling's comments about trans people

[edit]

When J.K. Rowling posted a series oftweets onTwitter about thetransgender community starting in 2020, she received significant criticism, including from mostHarry Potter cast members.[112] In response, Lynch tweeted "it's irresponsible to discuss such a delicate topic" on social media, and "I wish [Rowling] wouldn't. That said, as a friend and admirer of Jo I can’t forget what a generous and loving person she is." After posting these tweets and receiving blowback for supporting Rowling, Lynch deleted her Twitter account in 2020. In an interview withThe Telegraph in 2023, Lynch stated compassion for both sides of the argument, "I know what it was like to be a teenager who hated my body so much I wanted to crawl out of my skin, so I have great compassion for trans people and I don’t want to add to their pain. I do also think it’s important that J.K. Rowling has been amplifying the voices ofde-transitioners." Lynch stated the backlash against Rowling has surprised her, "I just felt that [Rowling's] character has always been to advocate for the most vulnerable members of society. The problem is that there's a disagreement over who's the most vulnerable. I do wish people would just give her more grace and listen to her."[16]

Personal life

[edit]

Lynch lives inLondon, England. She stated in a 2018 interview that she has not lived in Ireland since age 18, and previously lived inLos Angeles for five years.[87] In 2007, Lynch began a relationship with herHarry Potter cast member andChickPeeps co-hostRobbie Jarvis.[113] Lynch did not make the relationship public until 2015, when she posted photos of herself and Jarvis toInstagram.[114][115] She and Jarvis split the following year, though they remain on good terms.[116][117][118] She then dated singer-songwriter AnDel in 2017. They have since broken up.[119] As of 2021, Lynch was reportedly dating an unidentifiedFrench man she met in London.[120][121] In 2025, she confirmed she was in a relationship with a man named Den.[122]

In a 2014 interview, she mentioned her devoutCatholic upbringing. "I stopped going toMass a few years ago, mainly because I disagree with the rules," she said. "I don't like anything that's about punishing yourself and making you feel bad about yourself, and growing up I felt bad about indulging myself or doing anything for fun".[5]

Lynch has worked to promote healthy self-esteem and body image in young girls because of her previous experiences with the eating disorderanorexia nervosa.[123] She wrote an essay, "Why the Body Bind is My Nightmare", where she described her emotional struggle with her appearance and how she managed to overcome it through allusions pertaining to theHarry Potter series.[124]
