Eufydd fab Dôn is a minor figure inWelsh mythology, the son of the mother goddessDôn and brother to the better-known figures ofGwydion,Amaethon,Gofannon andArianrhod. It has been suggested that he derives from the Gaulish godOgmios and is cognate to theIrish heroOghma Grianainech.[1]
Eufydd appears in a number of Welsh texts, spelled variously asEuuyd, Eueyed, Euyd andIeunydd. He appears twice in theBook of Taliesin; first inPrif Gyfarch Taliesin in which it is stated:
and then again inMarwnat Aeddon:
The implication is that Eufydd was remembered in Welsh tradition as a skilled magician, intimately associated with his more illustrious brothers Gwydion and Gofannon, and with his uncleMath fab Mathonwy.
Eufydd also appears in the genealogical tractBonedd yr Arwyr (The Descent of the Saints) in which he is listed among the children of Dôn.
It has been suggested that Eufydd can be identified withHefeydd Hen, the father ofRhiannon who appears prominently in the first branch of theMabinogi.[4]
