Esplanade is an underground interchange metro station on the North–South corridor of theBlue Line and on the East–West corridor of theGreen Line ofKolkata Metro.[2][3][4] This station, which is the biggest in the city, is located in theEsplanade neighbourhood ofKolkata, at the northern end ofChowringhee Road/Jawaharlal Nehru Road nearNew Market and theOberoi Grand hotel. It opened in 1984 as part of what is now the Blue Line. The station is re-designed to be the largest station of the metro system and will function as theinterchange station between Blue, Green and Purple Lines.[8] The Line-2 complex, built below the Line-1 complex (requiring modification to Line-1 station) was completed and inaugurated on 6 March 2024, with connections toSealdah on 22 August 2025.[5][8][9][10][7] The Line-2 complex is designed with world class amenities andmurals that depict theculture,tradition,sports,monuments, important structures, etc. in them.[11][12][13]
