William Ernest "Ernie" Campbell (born 20 October 1949) is a formersoccer forward. He was a member of theAustralian1974 World Cup squad inWest Germany and representedAustralia 24 times between 1971 and 1975 and scored three goals.
Born in Sydney, Australia,[1] Campbell started playingfootball as a junior in Sydney and was spotted by scouts from English clubChelsea in 1965 in an under 16 junior curtain raiser and accepted a three-season apprenticeship fromChelsea F.C. He returned to Australia after seven months.[2][3][4]
He later returned to Sydney to joinAPIA and thenMarconi Stallions, playing in theNSL withMarconi Stallions,Sydney City andSt George.[5][6]
He wonNSW honours in 1974 and made his international debut againstIsrael in November 1971 inMelbourne.
