Erik Thomson is a New Zealand-Australian actor. He playedHades in the television seriesHercules: The Legendary Journeys,Xena Warrior Princess andYoung Hercules, Dr. Mitch Stevens inAll Saints and Dave Rafter inPacked to the Rafters.

Thomson won anAustralian Film Institute Award for his performance in the Australian feature filmSomersault.

Early life

Erik Thomson was bornc. 1967[1] inInverness,Scotland, and his family emigrated toNew Zealand when he was seven. He studied performing arts at theNew Zealand Drama School inWellington andEnglish Literature and drama atVictoria University of Wellington.[2][3]

Career

Thomson had a number of television roles in New Zealand, starting withMarlin Bay, a drama set in a casino and resort. He won a wider fan following for his occasional appearances as the godHades in the seriesHercules: The Legendary Journeys,[4]Xena: Warrior Princess andYoung Hercules, all three series of which were filmed in New Zealand.

In 1995, Thomson moved to Australia and landed regular roles inPacific Drive, medical seriesAll Saints (1999–2003) andThe Alice (2005). He has had guest roles on such series asWildside andAlways Greener. From 2008 to 2013, Thomson played Dave Rafter on theSeven Networkdramedy seriesPacked to the Rafters. From 2015 to 2018 he had the lead role in800 Words.[5]

Thomson's work in theatre includes roles inComplete Works of Shakespeare,Julius Caesar,Twelve Angry Men, andAngels in America.[citation needed]

Thomson's film credits include the role of soldier Simon Mollison in the 2008 filmThe Black Balloon withToni Collette. He appeared inSomersault withAbbie Cornish andSam Worthington, which scored him an AFI Award. He also featured inAccidents Happen withGeena Davis andStorm Boy withGeoffrey Rush, and Finn Little.[6]

In 2023, Thomson appeared in channel 7 seriesThe Claremont Murders.[7]

In 2024 Thomson was named in the cast forKangaroo Island.[8] On 21 October 2024, Thomson was announced to play Scrooge for the 2024 theatre season ofA Christmas Carol.[9]

Thomson won anAustralian Film Institute Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance inSomersault, and was nominated for his work inThe Black Balloon. For television, he has been nominated for aLogie Award five times and has won twoSilver Logie for Most Popular Actor.
