Enping,alternatelyromanized asYanping,[a] is acounty-level city inGuangdong province, China, administered as part of theprefecture-levelcity ofJiangmen.

Enping administers an area of 1,698 km2 (656 sq mi) and had an estimated population of 483,907 in 2020.[5] Itsdiaspora accounts for around 420,000overseas Chinese, particularly in theAmericas mainlyVenezuela.[citation needed] The area around Enping is known for its manyhot springs.

Geography

Enping is located in southwestGuangdong, at the western edge of thePearl River Delta and beside theSouth China Sea. Enping bordersKaiping to the northeast andYangjing to the southwest.

History

Enping County was established in AD 220. Under theQing, it made up part of thecommandery ofZhaoqing[1] and was one of theFour Counties responsible for much of the earlyChinese diaspora from Guangdong in the 19th century. Manyoverseas Chinese trace their ancestry to Enping, particularly among theChinese in Venezuela. Migrants from Enping and their families make up about 200,000 of the country's estimated 400,000 Chinese. Emigration to Venezuela occurred primarily in the decades including and following theWorld Wars, with the largest batch leaving at the end of theCultural Revolution in the late 1970s. Enping was made acounty-level city in 1994. TheEnping financial crisis later in the decade led to a massive scandal and the loss of financial services in the city.

Demographics

Enping is a part of theGreater Taishan Region orSze Yap Region, which includesKaiping,Xinhui, Enping and Taishan.According to reliable materials, Enping is the ancestral hometown of 360,000 overseas Chinese.
