Empidonomus is agenus of smallpasserine birds in thetyrant flycatcher familyTyrannidae that are found in South America. The genus contains two species.
The genusEmpidonomus was introduced in 1860 by the German ornithologistsJean Cabanis andFerdinand Heine to accommodate a single species,Muscicapa variaVieillot, thevariegated flycatcher.[1] This is thetype species.[2] The genus name combines theAncient Greek εμπις/empis, εμπιδος/empidos meaning "gnat" or "mosquito" with -νομος/-nomos meaning "-ruling".[3]
