Nick Dumont (born November 15, 1994), known professionally asEmma Dumont, is an American actor, model, and dancer. They[a] are known for their roles as Melanie Segal in theABC Family seriesBunheads, Emma Karn in theNBC seriesAquarius,Lorna Dane/Polaris in theFOX seriesThe Gifted, and Jackie Oppenheimer in theChristopher Nolan biographical thrillerOppenheimer (2023).

Early life and education

Dumont was born inSeattle, Washington on November 15, 1994.[2][3] They attendedWashington Middle School and laterJames A. Garfield High School before homeschooling in order to pursue modeling and acting. They also attendedOrange County High School of the Arts in the Music and Theater Conservatory inSanta Ana, California.[4]

Dumont began performing in community theater at age six with performances at Seattle Public Theatre and Seattle Musical Theatre among others.[3]

In 2011, they were a member of aFIRST Tech Challenge team located inPasadena, California and in 2012 aFIRST Robotics Competition team based inBurbank, California in 2013.[5] Dumont spoke at the 2013 FIRST World Championship at a VIP Dinner on April 26, 2013.[6]

Career

Dumont is an actor, dancer, and model.[7]

Dumont's first film role was inTrue Adolescents in 2007 (released 2009) alongsideMelissa Leo andMark Duplass. They later appeared in the movieDear Lemon Lima (2009).

In January 2010, Dumont won theV magazineV A Model search contest, appearing in the March 2010 issue and receiving aFord Models contract.[8][9]

In 2011, they were cast in a lead role inStephen Gaghan's NBC pilotMetro, alongsideNoah Emmerich andJimmy Smits. In October 2011, Dumont was cast in the ABC Family original series,Bunheads, starringSutton Foster andKelly Bishop. Throughout 2012 and early 2013, they portrayed Melanie Segal, who attends the dance academy run by the lead's mother-in-law in the TV series.[10][11]

Also in 2012, they appeared in the independent filmNobody Walks alongsideDylan McDermott,John Krasinski,Jane Levy,Olivia Thirlby, andRosemarie DeWitt.[citation needed]

In 2014, Dumont filmed two television pilots for NBC:Aquarius, which ran for two seasons, andSalvation (starringAshley Judd), which was not picked up as a series. In March 2017, they were cast in Fox's pilot for anX-Men television series,The Gifted,[12] which was picked up to series in May 2017[13] and premiered the same year, in October.

Dumont portrayed Jackie Oppenheimer, the sister-in-law ofJ. Robert Oppenheimer, in the biopicOppenheimer, directed byChristopher Nolan.[14]

Personal life

Dumont participated inFor Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics on a team sponsored by NASA/JPL andWalt Disney Imagineering.[15][16]

In 2024, Dumont began usingthey/thempronouns on their Instagram. In December, Dumont came out astransmasculine andnon-binary, changing their name on the platform to Nick Dumont. Their publicist stated they use the name Nick with friends and family but will continue using the name Emma professionally.[17][18][19]
