Emőke J.E. Szathmáry,CM OM FRSC (born January 25, 1944, inHungary) is aphysical anthropologist, specializing in the study ofhuman genetics. Dr. Szathmáry served as the 10thPresident andVice-Chancellor of TheUniversity of Manitoba, 1996–2008.
Dr. Szathmáry's first administrative post was aschairman of the department ofanthropology atMcMaster University, a position she left to becomeDean of the Faculty ofSocial Science at the University of Western Ontario.[citation needed] She left this position to serve asprovost and vice-president (academic) at McMaster University inHamilton, Ontario, before going to her position at the University of Manitoba. Szathmáry was appointed a member of theOrder of Canada in 2003.[citation needed] In 2004, she was named one of Canada's top 100 most powerful women by theWomen's Executive Network and theRichard Ivey School of Business.[citation needed] In 2005, she was made aFellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She was named also as a Distinguished Lecturer by theAmerican Anthropological Association, which is the highest recognition given by the anthropological discipline for a lifetime of exemplary scholarship.[citation needed]
mőke J.E. Szathmáry served 12 years as the president of the University of Manitoba (1996-2008). As president emeritus and professor, she is continuing her academic appointments in the Department of Anthropology as well as in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics. Szathmáry has published over 80 articles and reviews, and she has co-edited three books. She is an elected Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America (1989), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1995) and the Royal Society of Canada (2005). She was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2003.
