Ellen Shipley (born March 24, 1949, inNew York City,New York, United States) is an American musician and songwriter.

At sixteen years old, Shipley got aNYC Cabaret license. She performed a duo act in Greenwich Village in the early 70's with Steve Fields.^[1] Shipley was noticed by aTommy Mottola associate, in a jazz club in NYC,Pearl’s Place, and signed to Mottola's company.^[2] Nowels^[3] approached Shipley in a Woodstock, NY cafe, asked Shipley write with him for a Belinda Carlisle solo album.^[4]

Shipley is best known for her work withRick Nowels.^[8] Together they have written forKim Wilde and worked on theBelinda Carlisle^[9][10] albumsBelinda,Heaven on Earth,Runaway Horses, andLive Your Life Be Free. Shipley has also done solo work, collaborated withRalph Schuckett, and appeared on 13 December 1980 onSaturday Night Live.^[11][12] In 1994,Great Performances episodeSeptember Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill featuredDavid Johansen, Ellen Shipley,Ralph Schuckett, andBob Dorough singing "Alabama Song" in a beat-up old pickup truck in search of whiskey.^[13][14] She, withNicky Holland,^{[15][16][17][18][19][20][21]} co-wrote "Will We Ever Learn", and it was recorded forOleta Adams'Circle of One album.
