Elizabeth Debicki (born 24 August 1990)[1] is an Australian actress. Born in Paris and raised inMelbourne, she studied acting at theUniversity of Melbourne. Her accolades include aPrimetime Emmy Award, aGolden Globe Award, and aScreen Actors Guild Award as well as a nomination for aBritish Academy Television Award. She received theCannesTrophée Chopard in 2019.

She made her film debut in the comedyA Few Best Men (2011), before her breakout role inBaz Luhrmann's period drama filmThe Great Gatsby (2013) earning aAACTA Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has since acted in the historical epicMacbeth (2015), the spy filmThe Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015), the thrillerWidows (2018), the science fiction filmTenet (2020) and the slasherMaXXXine (2024). She has also playedAyesha in theMarvel Cinematic Universe filmsGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) andGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023).

On television, she has acted in the Australian seriesRake (2014) andThe Kettering Incident (2016) as well as theAMC limited seriesThe Night Manager (2016) and theHBO filmThe Tale (2018). Early life and education

Debicki was born on 24 August 1990 in Paris, France[1] to a Polish father and an Australian mother of Irish descent.[2][3][4] Her parents were both ballet dancers, who met while performing in a show together.[5] When Debicki was five, the family moved toGlen Waverley, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia.[6][7] The eldest of three children, she has a sister and a brother.[8]

Debicki became interested in ballet early in life and trained as a dancer until deciding to switch to theatre.[9] A student at Huntingtower School in eastern Melbourne, she achieved two perfectstudy scores in Drama and English and was the school'sdux when she graduated in 2007.[10] In 2010, Debicki completed abachelor's degree in drama at theVictorian College of the Arts of the University of Melbourne.[2][11] In August 2009, she was the recipient of aRichard Pratt Bursary for outstanding acting students in their second year of training.[12]

Career

Career beginnings (2011–2016)

Debicki made her feature film debut in the 2011 Australian filmA Few Best Men, with a brief appearance as a secretary. This was her first role after graduating from drama school. After seeing heraudition reel, directorBaz Luhrmann, who was casting for his upcoming film adaptation ofThe Great Gatsby, flew her to auditions in Los Angeles, where she screen tested with actorTobey Maguire.[13] In May 2011, Luhrmann announced that she had been cast as Jordan Baker in his 2013 filmThe Great Gatsby.[14][15] She would go on to receive rave reviews for her portrayal of the character, winning anAACTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.[16] In December 2012, Debicki was the subject of a photo shoot forVogue Australia.[17][18]

From June to July 2013, Debicki played Madame in theSydney Theatre Company's production ofJean Genet's playThe Maids, withCate Blanchett starring as Claire andIsabelle Huppert as Solange.[19] She won the best newcomer award at theSydney Theatre Awards for her performance.[20] In 2014, the play transferred off-Broadway at theNew York City Center.[21] Around this same time, Debicki also starred in a 13-minute short film calledGÖDEL, incomplete[22] and made an appearance as a guest star in the third season of the Australian television seriesRake.[23]

In 2015, Debicki played supporting roles in three major motion pictures. She played the villain inGuy Ritchie's film adaptation ofThe Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015), learning to drive on set.[24][5] She also appeared in Australian film directorJustin Kurzel's adaptation ofMacbeth, as well as the biographical adventure filmEverest, which would gross $203 million worldwide.[25][26] The following year, she starred as Mona Sanders alongsideMark Strong andHope Davis in the world première stage adaptation ofGeorges Simenon's novelThe Man on the Bench in the Barn titledThe Red Barn byDavid Hare at the National Theatre'sLyttelton Theatre in London.[27] The play ran from October 2016 to January 2017.

In 2016 Debicki played major roles in two television shows. She played the lead role of Dr. Anna Macy in the eight-part Australian television seriesThe Kettering Incident, which was largely shot on location in Tasmania.[28] A few months after shooting on that show ended, Debicki headed to Switzerland to begin shooting the television miniseriesThe Night Manager; she played the role of Jed in the adaptation of theJohn le Carré novelof the same name.[29] The show aired in the United States in April 2016.[30]

Breakthrough (2017–present)

Following the success ofThe Night Manager, Debicki landed a supporting role in theMarvel Studios filmGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which she portrayedAyesha, leader of the Sovereign people. She returned for its sequel and the final installment in the film series,Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.[31] In June 2017, she was added to the cast of directorLuc Besson'sValerian and the City of a Thousand Planets in an undisclosed voice-over role.[32] The film would arrive in theatres around two months later, at which time her role was revealed to be that of Emperor Haban-Limaï. 2017 also saw Debicki as Eva in Australian actorSimon Baker's directorial debutBreath, for which she would receive an AACTA Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The film would garner five additional AACTA Award nominations, including Best Film, and would win Best Supporting Actor and Best Sound at the8th AACTA Awards.[33][34]

In 2018, Debicki appeared in five films. She played the role of Jensen inThe Cloverfield Paradox, the third instalment in theCloverfield franchise.[35] The film was released on Netflix in February 2018, directly afterSuper Bowl LII. Following this, she appeared as Mrs. G in the critically acclaimed HBO filmThe Tale, for which she received rave reviews. One of her biggest roles yet would come several months later, however, in November 2018; she played the role of Alice inSteve McQueen's heist filmWidows.[36] Upon the film's release, she received some of the best reviews of her career, with many critics stating how impressed they were that she managed to stand out among such a crowded cast, which included the likes ofViola Davis andLiam Neeson.[37] The same year, Debicki also starred asVirginia Woolf inVita & Virginia and was the voice of Mopsy Rabbit inPeter Rabbit. She would return for the sequel,Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.

Debicki had a leading role in the 2019 thrillerThe Burnt Orange Heresy, in which she starred oppositeClaes Bang andMick Jagger.[38] The following year, she starred inChristopher Nolan's spy filmTenet (2020)[39] as Kat, the estranged wife ofKenneth Branagh's character.Peter Bradshaw ofThe Guardian thought that she had "the most recognisable human emotions here, shouting, crying and even smiling in a way that no one else quite does" but added that her role was similar to the one she played inThe Night Manager.[40] In an interview withThe Hindu, Debicki recalls, "Playing Kat, I understood the harrowing scenes are important to show the audience the threats to her existence — physical and psychological — she faced."[41]

Debicki portrayedDiana, Princess of Wales in the final two seasons of theNetflix period drama seriesThe Crown.[42] Her performance in the fifth season earned her nominations for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, theGolden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series – Comedy/Musical or Drama, and theScreen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.[43][44][45] In 2024, Debicki won a Golden Globe Award,Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in the sixth and final season ofThe Crown.[46][47][48][49] Her portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales also earned her a nomination forBritish Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress.[50]

In 2025, she returned to the stage acting oppositeEwan McGregor in Lila Raicek'sMy Master Builder, a contemporary adaptation ofHenrik Ibsen playThe Master Builder at theWyndham’s Theatre on theWest End.[51][52]
