Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italian pronunciation:[elizaˈbɛttakottʃaˈretto];[1] born 25 January 2001) is an Italian professionaltennis player.She has beenranked by theWTA as high as No. 29 in singles, achieved on 21 August 2023, and No. 107 in doubles, which she attained on 27 January 2025. Cocciaretto has won two singles titles, at the2023 Ladies Open Lausanne and at the2026 Hobart International.

She made her debut for the seniorItaly Fed Cup team in2018 at 17 years old. She was a member of the Italian squad which won theBillie Jean King Cup in2024 and2025 editions.

Early life and background

Cocciaretto was born inAncona to Piero Cocciaretto and Jessica Marcozzi. Her father played amateur tennis in his youth.[2] She began playing tennis at the age of five, attending free classes at the Circolo Tennis inPorto San Giorgio.[3][4] Her tennis idols wereRoger Federer andCaroline Wozniacki.[5]

Junior years

Cocciaretto reached the semifinals of the2018 Australian Open girls' singles tournament, but lost to eventual championLiang En-shuo.[6][7] On 5 February 2018, she achieved a career-high ITF junior combined ranking of No. 17.

At the2018 Summer Youth Olympics, she reached the second round in singles.[8]

Professional

2019: WTA Tour debut

In May 2019, Cocciaretto made herWTA Tour debut as a wildcard at theItalian Open, where she lost toAmanda Anisimova in the first round.[9] In July, she qualified for her first WTA 250 at thePalermo Ladies Open, but lost again in the first round, to third seedViktória Hrunčáková.[10]

2020: Major debut, WTA Tour quarterfinal & WTA 125 final

In January, Cocciaretto qualified for her first major main draw at theAustralian Open, defeatingBibiane Schoofs,Francesca Di Lorenzo, andTereza Martincová in qualifying,[11][12]but lost to 17th-seededAngelique Kerber in the first round.[13]

She reached her first WTA Tour quarterfinal in August inPalermo, defeatingPolona Hercog[14] and sixth seedDonna Vekić,[15] before losing to fourth seedAnett Kontaveit.[16] She also reached the doubles final in Palermo with compatriotMartina Trevisan, but they lost toArantxa Rus andTamara Zidanšek.[17]

Cocciaretto reached her firstWTA 125 final, seeded second, at theSparta Prague Open, defeatingDalila Jakupović,[18]Daniela Seguel, Bibiane Schoofs,Georgina García Pérez,[19]Anna Karolína Schmiedlová[20] andNadia Podoroska,[21] before losing toKristína Kučová.[22]

2021: First WTA Tour semifinal, injury hiatus

In January 2021, Cocciaretto once again qualified for theAustralian Open, but lost toMona Barthel in the first round.[23] After qualifying for theAbierto Zapopan, Cocciaretto advanced to her first tour semifinal, defeatingWang Xiyu, Nadia Podoroska, andLauren Davis, before losing to wildcardEugenie Bouchard.[24][25] In May, she entered her firstFrench Open as a lucky loser, but lost toAna Bogdan in the first round.[26] Following her first-round exit at theBudapest Grand Prix, Cocciaretto's season ended was cut short by a knee injury, for which she underwent surgery.[27][28]

2022: WTA 125 title, Wimbledon, US Open & top 100 debuts

In May, Cocciaretto made her second WTA 125 final at theMakarska International Championships, defeatingMagdalena Fręch,Julia Grabher,Clara Burel, and Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, before losing toJule Niemeier in the final.[29]

On her debut, using her protected ranking, she recorded her first major win atWimbledon, defeating compatriot and 22nd seed Martina Trevisan.[30]Cocciaretto qualified for her firstUS Open in August, but lost toAliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round.[31]Seeded fifth at theBari, she reached the quarterfinals.[32] PartneringOlga Danilović, she won thedoubles title at the same tournament, defeatingAndrea Gámiz andEva Vedder in the final.[33]

In October, she recorded her first WTA 1000 win inGuadalajara by defeatingAnastasia Potapova,[34] before losing to fifth seedCoco Gauff.[35] The following week, she won her maiden WTA 125 singles title at theAbierto Tampico, beatingCarol Zhao,[36] second seedMarie Bouzková,[37] seventh seedCamila Osorio[38] and sixth seedZhu Lin to reach the final,[39] where she overcame fifth seedMagda Linette in three sets.[40][41]

2023: Maiden WTA Tour title, Italian number one

In January, Cocciaretto reached her first WTA Tour final at theHobart International, defeating third seedAlizé Cornet,[42]Jasmine Paolini,[43] sixth seedBernarda Pera[44] andSofia Kenin,[45] but ultimately losing to qualifier Lauren Davis.[46][47] As a result, she reached the top 50 on 16 January 2023 at world No. 48, becoming the Italian No. 2 female player in the WTA rankings. The following month, she reached quarterfinals at theMérida Open, defeatingViktorija Golubic[48] andWang Xinyu,[49] before losing to fourth seedKateřina Siniaková.[50] The following week at theMonterrey Open, she reached back-to-back quarterfinals, defeatingMarina Bassols Ribera[51] andTatjana Maria.[52] Her run was ended by fourth seedElise Mertens.[53]

In April, she won her second WTA 125 title as the top seed inSan Luis Potosí, defeatingMarcela Zacarías,[54] Nadia Podoroska,[55] Tamara Zidanšek,[56]Elina Avanesyan[57] and seventh seedSara Errani.[58][59]

At theFrench Open, Cocciaretto defeated 10th seedPetra Kvitová[60] and qualifierSimona Waltert[61] before losing to Bernarda Pera in the third round.[62] As a result, she reached a career-high ranking of No. 41 on 12 June 2023, and became the No. 1 women's singles player in Italy.[63] AtWimbledon, she again reached the third round at a major, defeating Camila Osorio[64] andRebeka Masarova,[65] before falling to fourth seedJessica Pegula.[66]

Seeded second at theLadies Open Lausanne, Cocciaretto won her maiden tour title, defeating wildcard entrantCéline Naef,[67]Julia Riera,[68] eighth seedElina Avanesyan,[69]Anna Bondár[70] and Clara Burel.[71][72]

2024: French Open fourth round, BJK Cup champion

At theAustralian Open, Cocciaretto defeated qualifierLulu Sun in the first round,[73] but lost to 27th seedEmma Navarro in the second.[74]As a lucky loser inDubai, she overcame Elise Mertens in the first round,[75] before falling to third seedCoco Gauff.[76]

She won her third WTA 125 title seeded fourth atCharleston, defeatingArina Rodionova,[77]Marina Bassols Ribera,[78]McCartney Kessler,[79]Greet Minnen[80] and seventh seedDiana Shnaider.[81][82] Seeded seventh inRabat, Cocciaretto reached the quarterfinals defeatingYasmine Kabbaj andBai Zhuoxuan,[83] before losing toKamilla Rakhimova.[84] At theFrench Open, she defeated 13th seedBeatriz Haddad Maia,[85][86]Cristina Bucșa[87] and 17th seedLiudmila Samsonova to reach her first Grand Slam tournament fourth round.[88][89] Cocciaretto had her run ended by third seed Coco Gauff.[90]

Wins over top seedJelena Ostapenko,[91]Sloane Stephens[92] andDiana Shnaider,[93] saw her make it through to her first grass-court semifinal at theBirmingham Classic, before losing to eventual championYulia Putintseva.[94] In November, Cocciaretto was part of theItaly squad which won theBillie Jean King Cup,[95] although she lost the only match she was selected for, going down in three sets toEna Shibahara in the quarterfinal tie againstJapan.[96]

2025: Wimbledon third round, two-time BJK Cup champion

Seeded seventh at theTransylvania Open, Cocciaretto defeatedIrina-Camelia Begu[97] and wildcard entrantAna Bogdan[98] to reach the quarterfinals, where she lost to compatriotLucia Bronzetti.[99]

In June at theRosmalen Open in's-Hertogenbosch, she overcame wildcard entrantArianne Hartono,[100]Bernarda Pera[101] andSuzan Lamens to make it through to the semifinals,[102] where she lost to qualifierElena-Gabriela Ruse.[103]AtWimbledon, Cocciaretto defeated third seedJessica Pegula in straight sets in a first-round match lasting just 58 minutes for her second win against a top-10 ranked opponent.[104][105] Next she overcameKatie Volynets to make it through to the third round,[106] at which point she lost toBelinda Bencic.[107]

A week after her elimination from Wimbledon, Cocciaretto won the clay court WTA 125Nordea Open in Sweden, defeatingKatarzyna Kawa in the final.[108][109] As a result, she returned to the top 100, rising 40 places to No. 76 on 14 July 2025.[110]

In September, she helped Italy retain theBJK Cup, defeatingYuan Yue in their quarterfinal against China[111] and Emma Navarro as they swept the United States 2–0 in the final.[112]At theGuangzhou Open in October, Cocciaretto recorded three sets wins overDiane Parry[113] and wildcard entrantWang Xiyu,[114] before losing in the quarterfinals to second seedAnn Li.[115]

2026: Second WTA title, first WTA 1000 quarterfinal

Having qualified for the main-draw at theHobart International, Cocciaretto won her second WTA title, defeating third seedIva Jovic in the final,[116][117] after recording victories over fellow qualifierAyano Shimizu,[118] fourth seed Ann Li,[119] Anna Bondár[120] andAntonia Ružić[121] on her way to the championship match.

In February at theQatar Open, Cocciaretto entered the main-draw as a lucky loser and defeated wildcard entrantElsa Jacquemot,[122] world No. 4 Coco Gauff[123] and Ann Li to reach her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.[124] She lost in the last eight to Jeļena Ostapenko.[125]
