LILO (Linux Loader) is abootloader forLinux and was the default boot loader for mostLinux distributions prior to the widespread adoption ofGRUB in the early 2000s. Unlikeloadlin, LILO allowed booting Linux without havingDOS on the computer.[3] As of 2009, most distributions have switched toGRUB as the default boot loader.[4] Further development of LILO was discontinued in December 2015 along with a request by Joachim Wiedorn for potential developers.[5]

ForEFI-based PC hardware the now orphaned[6]ELILO boot loader was developed,[7] originally byHewlett-Packard forIA-64 systems, but later also for standardi386 andamd64 hardware with EFI support.
On any version of Linux running on Intel-basedApple Macintosh hardware, ELILO is one of the available bootloaders.[8]
It supports network booting usingTFTP/DHCP.[9][10]
This project is orphaned, Debian dropped it in 2014, and RH & SUSE stopped using this tree (and feeding back change) long before that so no longer interested in working on it.
