Eli Sims Shorter (March 15, 1823 – April 29, 1879) was aU.S. representative fromAlabama.[1]
Born inMonticello, Georgia, Shorter attended the common schools and was graduated in law fromYale College in 1844. He wasadmitted to the bar and commenced practice inEufaula, Alabama, in 1844.[1] He also engaged in agricultural pursuits.
Shorter was elected as aDemocrat to theThirty-fourth andThirty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1855 – March 3, 1859). He resumed the practice of law inEufaula, Alabama. During theCivil War, he served in theConfederate States Army ascolonel of the18th Regiment Alabama Infantry. He died in Eufaula, Alabama, April 29, 1879. He was interred in Fairview Cemetery.[2]
