Eleanor Grace Harvey (born January 14, 1995) is aCanadianfoilfencer. She is a three-timeOlympian and won the bronze medal in theindividual foil event at the2024 Summer Olympics.[4] Harvey is also aPan American Games champion, a two-timePan American Fencing champion, a two-timeJunior World Championships silver medalist and a two-time Pan American Junior champion.

Early life

Harvey became interested in becoming anOlympian while watching the2000 Sydney Games.[5] She began training for long distance running before turning to karate at eight years old.[5] She trained karate for two years before finding out that karate was not anOlympic sport at that time.[5] Harvey changed to practicing fencing after a family friend heard a radio interview withSherraine Schalm and suggested the sport.[5][6]

Career

Harvey qualified to represent Canada at the2016 Summer Olympics by being ranked in the top two in the Americas outside the top 14 rankings.[7] Harvey competed in thewomen's foil event and defeated world number oneArianna Errigo to reach the quarterfinals. She finished in seventh place, the highest finish for a Canadian fencer in Olympic history at the time. Harvey represented Canada at the2020 Summer Olympics and competed in thewomen's foil event, where she reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by eventual gold medalistLee Kiefer, and thewomen's team foil event, where Canada placed fifth.[8]

At the2024 Summer Olympics, Harvey won Canada's first Olympic medal in fencing after defeatingAlice Volpi in the bronze medal match in theindividual foil event.[9][10][11] She also competed in thewomen's team foil event, where Canada finished in fourth place after losing the bronze medal match to Japan.
