Eikefjord is aformer municipality in theSunnfjorddistrict in the oldSogn og Fjordanecounty,Norway. The 145-square-kilometre (56 sq mi) municipality existed from 1923 until 1964 when it joinedFlora Municipality (now part ofKinn Municipality inVestland county). Theadministrative center of the former municipality was thevillage of Eikefjord, whereEikefjord Church is located. The municipality of Eikefjord was located at the end of theEikefjorden, about 30 kilometres (19 mi) east of the town ofFlorø. The lakeEndestadvatnet was part of the municipality. The municipality encompassed the immediate area around the village of Eikefjord and to the east and south of the village.[2]
Theparish of Eikefjord was established as amunicipality on 1 January 1923 when the large municipality ofKinn was divided into three:Kinn (population: 2,508) in the west,Bru (population: 1,560) in the centre, and Eikefjord (population: 929) in the east.[3]
During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of theSchei Committee. On 1 January 1964, Eikefjord Municipality (population: 919) was merged with the town ofFlorø (population: 2,040),Kinn Municipality (population: 3,567), the parts ofBru Municipality located north of theFørdefjorden (population: 1,155), the Husefest and Breivik areas ofBremanger Municipality (population: 9), and the Steindal area ofVevring Municipality (population: 25) were combined to form the newly createdFlora Municipality.[3]
The municipality (originally theparish) is named after the oldEikefjord farm (Old Norse:Eikifjǫrðr) since the firstEikefjord Church was built there. The farm was named after the localfjord. The first element comes form the wordeik which means "oak". The last element isfjǫrðr which means "fjord" or "firth".[4]
During its existence, this municipality was governed by amunicipal council ofdirectly elected representatives. Themayor wasindirectly elected by a vote of the municipal council.[5]
