Eidelstedt (German pronunciation:[ˈaɪdl̩ˌʃtɛt]) is a quarter ofHamburg,Germany, in the borough ofEimsbüttel. It is located on the northwestern boundaries of the borough and of the city.

Geography

[edit]

Eidelstedt borders the quarters ofSchnelsen,Niendorf,Stellingen, as well asBahrenfeld andLurup in the neighbouringAltona borough.

History

[edit]

In 1266/69 Eidelstedt was first recorded as a village,[2] then under the names ofEilstede, Eylstedt orEylenstede. The part-stedt in the name refers to a Saxonian foundation, meaning safe settlement or safe residence, which was founded by a first settler namedEyler. Another explanation derives fromIlenstätten, referring to a place (German:Stätte), where medicinalleeches (German:Egel, Blutegel,Low German:Ilen) could be found, namely in a stream called Mühlenau and the pond of Mühlenteich in the village.[3] In 1937, the village was incorporated intoHamburg by theGreater Hamburg Act, which came into force in 1938.[2]
