Edzard Schmidt-Jortzig (born 8 October 1941) is a Germanjurist. He currently holds the chair forpublic law at theUniversity of Kiel. A member of theFree Democratic Party, he served asFederal Minister of Justice in theFifth Kohl cabinet between 1996 and 1998.
Born inBerlin, Schmidt-Jortzig was raised inLüneburg,Lower Saxony. He studied law and received his firstStaatsexamen in 1966, and the second in 1969. In 1984, he became a professor of public law at the University of Kiel and joined the Free Democratic Party.
In the1994 German federal election, he earned a seat in theBundestag, and in 1996, he succeededSabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger as Federal Minister of Justice of Germany.
