Edward Lachman (born March 31, 1948) is an American cinematographer and director. He has primarily worked inindependent film, and has served as director of photography on films byTodd Haynes,Pablo Larrain,Ulrich Seidl,Wim Wenders,Steven Soderbergh andPaul Schrader.
Lachman has received fourAcademy Award for Best Cinematography nominations for his work onFar from Heaven (2002),Carol (2015),El Conde (2023), andMaria (2024).[1]His other work includesLa Soufrière (1977),Desperately Seeking Susan (1985),Mississippi Masala (1991),The Virgin Suicides (1999),Erin Brockovich (2000),A Prairie Home Companion (2006), andLife During Wartime (2009).[2]
For his work on television, he was nominated for thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited Series or Movie for theHBO miniseriesMildred Pierce (2011). He is a member of theAmerican Society of Cinematographers.
Lachman was born to aJewish family[3] inMorristown, New Jersey, the son of Rosabel (Roth) and Edward Lachman, a movie theater distributor and owner.[4][5][6] He attendedHarvard University and studied in France at theUniversity of Tours before pursuing aBFA in painting atOhio University.[5] He has a daughter, Bella Lachman (b. 2005) who lives in Amsterdam.[7]
In 1989, Lachman co-directed a segment of theanthology filmImagining America.[8] In 2002, he co-directed the controversialKen Park withLarry Clark. In 2013, Lachman produced a series of videos in collaboration with French electronic duoDaft Punk, for their albumRandom Access Memories.
